Beautiful but not flawless
Tried this at a tasting event and was genuinely impressed. The nose is all dark chocolate, raisins, and polished wood — proper old Speyside character. On the palate it's silky and complex but I found the finish slightly drier than I expected. Still a remarkable dram, especially neat.
9 October 2025Tomintoul doesn't get enough love
People sleep on Tomintoul and I don't understand why. This 15 year old with the tawny port finish is genuinely excellent. Rich nose of dark berries and marzipan, smooth as anything on the palate. I keep going back to it over flashier bottles on my shelf.
26 January 2026Proper cask strength punch
At 57.1% this doesn't mess around — big tropical fruit and honey on the nose that opens up beautifully with a few drops of water. For a young Korean single malt I'm genuinely impressed by the complexity here. The Whisky Exchange exclusivity makes it a nice bottle to show off at tastings too.
27 February 2026A piece of whisky history
Getting hold of a pre-Royal Warrant Laphroaig 10 is something I never thought I'd manage. The peat is there but it's rounder and more medicinal than modern bottlings, with this gorgeous iodine and seaweed character that just doesn't quit. At £900 it's not cheap, but for a 1990s bottle in this condition, I'd say it's actually fair. I sipped this one neat over the course of an evening and savoured every drop.
13 February 2026Shared this with friends and they loved it
Cracked this open for a birthday gathering and it was the star of the night. Really approachable for such an old whisky — no harsh wood bitterness at all, just layers of dried apricot, toffee, and gentle spice. Everyone commented on how easy it was to drink neat. The Single Malts of Scotland bottlings have been consistently solid in my experience and this one delivers.
16 December 2025The Spot range keeps delivering
I've tried Green and Yellow Spot before and Blue might be my favourite of the three. The cask strength really lets the pot still character shine through — buttery, slightly floral, with dried fruit on the finish. Worth every penny if you appreciate Irish whiskey done right.
31 October 2025A proper old Highland dram
Glen Garioch doesn't get the hype it deserves and this 1978 vintage proves it. Rich sherry notes, beeswax, and a long finish with stewed plums and a hint of smoke. I drink it neat with a tiny splash of water to tame that 57.8%. Not cheap at £950 but try finding another 30-year-old at cask strength for less.
17 March 2026Nice dram, slightly one-note
I picked this up expecting fireworks from the octave cask maturation and the PX finish. It's pleasant — lots of stewed fruit and treacle — but it stays in that lane the whole way through. Was hoping for more complexity at 17 years old. Still enjoyable neat after dinner, just didn't blow me away for the price.
27 December 2025Brought this to a tasting night
Took this to our whisky club last weekend and it was the favourite of the evening, beating out bottles twice the price. The Madeira finish gives it this gorgeous red berry and raisin character, and at 46% it's incredibly drinkable. Three of us have since ordered our own bottles. Says it all really.
12 November 2025Wild ride in the best way
This is unlike anything I've had from an Irish distillery. The spicebag concept actually works — you get this warm mix of five-spice and rye pepper that hits different at 50% ABV. Had it neat and kept finding new things in the glass. At £94 it's not cheap but it's a genuine conversation starter.
24 November 2025Good not great
Had this at a tasting night and it was enjoyable enough. The peat is restrained compared to Islay malts, more like a subtle backdrop than the main event. Some nice citrus and spice notes come through with a few drops of water. Wouldn't say it justifies the price tag over a standard Ardmore Legacy plus a nice bottle of something else, but it's a quality dram.
17 February 2026Ghost distillery magic
I nearly choked at the £900 price tag but a friend let me try his bottle and I get it now. Massive peat smoke on the nose with this briny, almost medicinal quality that's unmistakably Port Ellen. At 40% it's gentler than you'd expect from an Islay but the finish just keeps going. Worth every penny if you can find it.
9 November 2025Warehouse 1 keeps delivering
These Warehouse 1 releases from Glen Moray are consistently good and this peated tequila finish might be my favourite so far. There's a lovely balance between the smoky cereals and a kind of peppery sweetness from the tequila barrel. At 58.5% ABV it's a proper sipper — I add a splash of water and just let it sit.
12 March 2026Bloody brilliant Sergeant
This is the Blair Athol I've been waiting for. The cask strength really lets the distillery character shine — nutty, malty, with this gorgeous dried apricot sweetness. I've gone through independent Blair Athols that cost twice as much and weren't half as interesting. Bought a backup bottle.
19 October 2025The terroir experiment that actually delivers
I'm a sucker for the provenance stuff and this one genuinely follows through. You can taste the difference the ancient barley makes — there's a nuttiness and weight to it that standard barley doesn't give you. The 50% ABV carries all those flavours without any burn. Really satisfying dram neat.
7 December 2025Decent sherry cask, nothing groundbreaking
It's a well-made whisky and the sherry influence is pleasant enough — some raisin and gentle spice. I just find it a bit one-dimensional compared to similarly priced Scotch sherried options. Would I buy it again? Maybe, but I wouldn't rush.
23 March 2026Interesting but not sure it's £99 interesting
Good whisky, no question. You get honey, vanilla, a bit of orchard fruit and that subtle Islay minerality. But at nearly a hundred quid for a 10 year old, I keep comparing it to what else I could buy. If the Bere Barley story excites you, go for it — the flavour does back it up, just about.
26 December 2025Punches well above its age
For a 4 year old rye this has no business being this good. At 56% ABV it's hot out of the bottle but give it ten minutes in the glass and you get this beautiful wave of baking spice, cinnamon, and cracked black pepper. I added a few drops of water and it opened up even more. Willett knows what they're doing with rye.
12 December 2025Solid IB pick but not cheap
I like Old Malt Cask bottlings and this one doesn't disappoint. Classic Craigellachie meatiness softened by the age, with stewed plums and a touch of sulphur that blows off after five minutes in the glass. At £96 it's fair for a 16-year-old at cask strength, though I've had comparable Speysides for less.
1 November 2025Interesting but pricey for what it is
I wanted to love this more than I did. The nose is great — brown sugar, light smoke, something almost like roasted corn — but the palate at full strength is just so hot that it's hard to pick out the nuances. With water it settles into a nice spiced vanilla finish. At £93 for a 5 year old I'd have to think twice before buying another bottle though.
