Nose

Jameson Black Barrel: The classic Irish punch is heavily muted on first blush. I get clove, honey, spring grass, with a little bit of the copper metallic taste. The nose is very reminiscent of springtime, it’s floral, sweet, no burn of alcohol. The very end has hints of oak and wheat.

Sláinte Irish Whiskey: First impressions are those of a breakfast pastry, I think of apple danishes in particular, with apple, yeast, and mild baking spice. There are some subtle notes of sweet red fruit and chocolate.

Both whiskeys present distinct aromatic profiles. The differences on the nose already hint at the divergent tasting experiences to come.

Palate

Jameson Black Barrel: First touch of the tongue is tart but gives away immediately to honey and clove. We evolve into caramel, razzberries, brown sugar, and cobbler. It is just a lovely profile along the mouth. Extremely soft without being overly delicate, you get the profile and don’t need to cleanse your palate before sipping this.

Sláinte Irish Whiskey: I get caramel and apple up front, this is certainly on the sweet end of the whiskey spectrum. This doesn’t seem to have any transition from the front of the palate to the finish. The finish has a sulphury quality with white pepper. Nothing unpleasant about it, but pretty straight forward

On the palate, the character of each whiskey really comes to life. This is where personal preference plays the biggest role.

Finish

Jameson Black Barrel: The finish is dessert like pie crust. It finishes too quick for my preference and leaves a soft touch of clover at the end.

Sláinte Irish Whiskey: Comments: 40% ABV. Aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks

The finish can make or break a whiskey. A long, satisfying finish keeps you coming back for another sip.

Value for Money

Both whiskeys are competitively priced for what they deliver, with Jameson Black Barrel at $37.99 and Sláinte Irish Whiskey at $37.99.

With both bottles in a comparable price range, the decision comes down to flavour preference rather than wallet size.

The Verdict

This is a genuinely close call. Both Jameson Black Barrel and Sláinte Irish Whiskey have their strengths, and picking a clear winner depends entirely on what you value most in a whiskey.

We'd recommend trying both if you can. Each has qualities that make it worth a pour.
