Aber Falls Sherry Cask Single Malt Welsh Whisky (40%) Welsh Whisky

7.5 /10
EDITOR
Type: Single Malt
ABV: 40%
Price: £25.25

Wales has been making quiet but determined strides in the world of single malt whisky, and Aber Falls sits at the centre of that conversation. Their Sherry Cask Single Malt arrives at a price point that practically dares you not to try it — £25.25 for a sherry-matured single malt is the kind of value proposition that gets my attention, regardless of where it was distilled.

This is a NAS expression bottled at 40% ABV, which tells us the distillery is focused on accessibility rather than cask strength theatrics. That is not a criticism. At this price, the intention is clear: put a well-made, approachable sherry-influenced Welsh whisky into as many hands as possible. And I think that is a perfectly sound ambition.

What you should expect from a sherry cask single malt at this strength is warmth without aggression. The sherry influence at 40% tends to express itself as dried fruit sweetness, a touch of spice, and that unmistakable richness that European oak imparts. Welsh single malts, still relatively young as a category, often carry a clean, slightly cereal-forward spirit character that sherry wood complements rather well — the cask does the heavy lifting in terms of complexity, while the spirit provides a bright, uncluttered canvas.

Tasting Notes

I have not included formal tasting notes for this particular bottling at this time. When detailed notes become available, this review will be updated accordingly. What I can say is that the combination of Welsh single malt spirit and sherry cask maturation places this firmly in the rich-and-fruity camp — expect to find it sitting comfortably alongside entry-level sherry-matured Speysiders in terms of general character.

The Verdict

I am giving the Aber Falls Sherry Cask Single Malt a score of 7.5 out of 10, and I want to be clear about why. This is not a whisky that will rewrite your understanding of what single malt can be. What it will do is offer genuine sherry cask character at a price that is, frankly, difficult to argue with. At £25.25, you are paying less than you would for most entry-level Scottish sherry-matured malts, and you are getting something that stands on its own merits.

The Welsh whisky category is still finding its feet, and expressions like this one are doing important work. They are proof that good whisky does not require a postcode in Speyside or Islay. For the curious drinker, for the person building out their home bar, or for anyone who simply wants a solid sherry cask malt without spending £40, this is a genuinely worthwhile bottle.

Best Served

Pour it neat at room temperature and give it five minutes to open up in the glass. At 40% ABV, it does not need water — what you want is to let the sherry influence unfold without dilution. If you are in the mood for something longer, this style of whisky makes a surprisingly good Highball with quality soda water. The sherry sweetness holds up well against carbonation, giving you something richer than your typical Highball without becoming heavy. A proper after-dinner dram, this one.
