The Antiquary is one of those brands that serious blended Scotch drinkers know, but that rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. Originally created in the 1880s and named after Sir Walter Scott's novel, it's a label with genuine heritage — though in recent decades it's sat quietly in the shadow of flashier competitors. The 21 Year Old expression with a port cask finish represents the kind of ambitious blending that I think deserves more attention than it typically receives.
At 21 years old, this is a serious age statement for a blend. To put that in perspective, you're looking at component malts and grains that have spent over two decades maturing before being married together and finished in port pipes. That finishing period adds another dimension to what is already a well-aged whisky. At £94.25, it sits in a bracket where you're competing with entry-level single malts of similar age — and frankly, a well-constructed blend at this age can offer complexity that many single malts at this price point simply cannot match. That's the dirty secret of Scotch economics: blenders have access to stocks from dozens of distilleries, and the best of them use that range to build something greater than the sum of its parts.
Tasting Notes
I won't fabricate specific notes where I'd rather let you discover them yourself, but here's what you should expect from a whisky of this profile. A 21-year-old blend finished in port casks is going to deliver richness and depth — think dark fruit sweetness layered over the kind of honeyed, malty warmth that comes with extended maturation. The port influence should bring berry compote and a vinous quality without overwhelming the base spirit. At 40% ABV, it's bottled at the legal minimum, which is my one real reservation — I'd love to see what this liquid could do at 43% or 46%. But the trade-off is approachability. This is a whisky designed to be generous and easy to enjoy, not one that demands you wrestle with it.
The Verdict
The Antiquary 21 Year Old Port Cask Finish is a genuinely impressive blended Scotch that punches above its weight. It represents something I'd like to see more of in the industry: aged blends treated with the same care and creativity — port cask finishing, in this case — that we've come to expect from single malt special releases. At under £95, it offers remarkable value for a 21-year-old whisky. You'd struggle to find a single malt of equivalent age at this price, let alone one with the added dimension of a port cask finish. If you're the sort of drinker who dismissed blends years ago, this is exactly the kind of bottle that should make you reconsider. It's polished, it's considered, and it has genuine character. An 8.5 out of 10 feels right — it loses half a mark for the 40% ABV and half a mark because I suspect the blend could be even more expressive with bolder bottling choices. But what's in the glass is very good indeed.
Best Served
Pour this neat in a Glencairn at room temperature and give it ten minutes to open up. The port cask influence will bloom as it breathes. If you want to stretch it further, a few drops of water won't hurt — at 40% ABV it's already quite gentle, but water can sometimes unlock extra fruitiness from port-finished whiskies. This is an after-dinner dram, full stop. Pair it with dark chocolate or a mature Stilton and you'll have a very civilised evening.

Good but not quite worth the price
7/10
The port cask finish adds a pleasant fruitiness and the 21 year age gives it decent complexity. I get toffee, stewed berries, and a hint of nuttiness on the finish. That said, for £94 I've had single malts that impressed me more. It's a well-made blend but the price tag sets expectations it doesn't quite meet.

Every time I pour this for someone they ask what it is. The port finish makes it so approachable — sweet red fruits up front, then this warm spiced oak that lingers. I drink it neat at room temperature and it's just effortless. Genuinely one of the better blended Scotches I've tried at this age statement.

Pleasantly surprised by this one

Wasn't expecting much from a blended Scotch but the 21 years of maturation and port cask finish really come through. There's a richness to it — dark berries, a bit of fig, soft vanilla underneath. It's gentle at 40% ABV so works well as a relaxed evening dram. Would buy again if I found it on offer.

Solid sipper, nothing flashy
8/10
Nice enough whisky that does what it says on the tin. Nose is all Christmas cake and plum jam from the port influence, palate follows through with some spice and dark chocolate. At 40% it's easy drinking neat but I do wish they'd bottled it a touch higher — feels like it could handle more punch.

Port finish really works here
9/10
I grabbed this on a whim and it's become one of my favourite after-dinner pours. The port cask finish gives it this lovely dried fruit and berry sweetness that plays really well against the classic Scotch oak and vanilla. At 21 years old and under a hundred quid, I think it's genuinely good value for an aged blend.
