Ardbeg has never been a distillery content to sit quietly in the corner. Each year, the Islay stalwart releases a limited-edition bottling to mark Ardbeg Day — that annual celebration during the Fèis Ìle festival when devotees from across the globe descend on the south coast of Islay to pay homage to one of the island's most characterful spirits. The 2019 edition, Ardbeg Drum, arrived with a rum-cask twist that raised more than a few eyebrows among the purists. Having spent considerable time with this bottle, I can say it earned its place in the lineup.

Ardbeg Drum is a no-age-statement single malt, bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration — a standard Ardbeg thankfully maintains across its limited releases. The distinguishing feature here is the influence of ex-rum casks in the maturation, which steers this dram into territory that feels distinctly tropical for a whisky born on one of Scotland's most wind-battered coastlines. It is Ardbeg doing what Ardbeg does well: taking the house style — that unmistakable peat-driven intensity — and filtering it through an unexpected lens.

As a single malt from Islay, expectations are calibrated accordingly. You come to Ardbeg expecting smoke, and Drum does not disappoint on that front. But the rum-cask influence adds a layer of sweetness and warmth that tempers the medicinal bite you might find in some of the distillery's more austere expressions. It is a balancing act, and one that largely succeeds. The NAS designation means we are working without the safety net of an age statement, but the liquid speaks with enough confidence that the omission feels like a creative choice rather than a compromise.

Tasting Notes

I will reserve detailed tasting notes for a future revisit under more controlled conditions. What I will say is this: if you have enjoyed Ardbeg's core range and appreciate the interplay between heavy peat and sweeter, fruit-forward cask influence, Drum sits comfortably in that space. The rum-cask character is present without being overbearing — it complements rather than competes.

The Verdict

At £225, Ardbeg Drum sits at a price point that reflects its limited-edition status and the secondary market reality of Ardbeg Day releases. Is it worth it? For collectors and committed Ardbeg enthusiasts, I believe so. This is a well-constructed single malt that demonstrates the distillery's willingness to experiment without abandoning its identity. The rum-cask maturation brings genuine character to the whisky rather than serving as a gimmick, and the 46% bottling strength gives it enough presence to hold its own. I would have liked to see a higher ABV — cask strength would have been welcome — but that is a minor quibble. A score of 7.9 out of 10 feels right: a strong, enjoyable dram that rewards attention but stops just short of the extraordinary heights Ardbeg has reached with some of its other limited releases.

Best Served

Pour this one neat in a Glencairn and give it ten minutes to open up. A few drops of water will coax out the sweeter rum-cask notes and soften the peat smoke, which I would recommend on a second pour. If you are feeling adventurous, Drum's tropical undertones make it a surprisingly effective candidate for a Japanese-style Highball with good soda water and a twist of lime — though I suspect the purists will want my head for suggesting it.
