The original Supernova, released back in 2009, was marketed as the peatiest whisky on earth, and the SN2019 continues that legacy with conviction. This is not a whisky for the faint-hearted. At 53.8%, this bottling carries real weight. There is a density to the spirit that rewards patience. The NAS designation will raise eyebrows for some, particularly at the £500 price point. But with Ardbeg, the Supernova releases have always been about intensity and character rather than age. Tasting Notes

The Supernova series has earned its reputation, and this 2019 edition does nothing to diminish it. I have scored it 8.2 out of 10 — a genuinely impressive dram that falls just short of perfection, held back only by the premium pricing that may place it beyond casual exploration. For the committed peat devotee, however, this is essential drinking.

Neat, in a Glencairn, with patience. Give it time to breathe. If the ABV proves too assertive on the first approach, add no more than a few drops of cool water — it opens the spirit considerably without dulling the peat. This is not a whisky for cocktails or long drinks. It demands your full attention, and it rewards it handsomely.
