There are whiskies you drink and whiskies you travel for. Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 Year Old, Batch 7, belongs firmly in the second category. Named after the stunning white sand beach on Islay's southern coast — a place so remote you earn it on foot — this annual limited release has become one of the most anticipated bottles in the peated whisky calendar. At 19 years old and bottled at a muscular 50.3% ABV, Batch 7 arrives carrying the weight of nearly two decades in oak and the unmistakable DNA of one of Islay's most uncompromising distilleries.

I first encountered the Traigh Bhan series on a rain-lashed afternoon in Port Ellen, the kind of day where Islay reminds you it owes you nothing. The bottle sat behind a bar that smelled of damp wool and wood smoke, and from the first pour I understood what Ardbeg had been building toward with this range. This is old peat — not the bonfire aggression of the younger expressions, but something that has had time to settle into itself, to find its composure without losing its identity.

At 19 years, the spirit has spent long enough in wood to develop genuine complexity. Ardbeg at this age is a different proposition to the 10 or the Uigeadail. The peat is still there — it would hardly be Ardbeg without it — but time has woven it into something broader. The 50.3% bottling strength is a smart decision, giving the whisky enough power to carry its flavours without requiring water, though a few drops will open it up if you prefer a gentler approach.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specifics that belong to your own glass. What I will say is this: expect the signature Ardbeg peat smoke tempered by nearly two decades of maturation. At this age, Islay single malts tend to develop a remarkable interplay between their coastal, smoky character and whatever the cask has contributed. The high bottling strength means nothing is held back. Pour it, give it five minutes, and let Batch 7 tell you what it wants to be.

The Verdict

At £235, the Traigh Bhan 19 sits in serious territory. But consider what you're getting: a 19-year-old Ardbeg at cask strength from one of the most revered distilleries on earth, in a batch-specific release that will never be repeated exactly this way again. For Islay devotees, that price feels honest rather than opportunistic — particularly when you compare it to what some distilleries are charging for younger, less distinctive whisky.

Batch 7 earns its place in the series. This is Ardbeg doing what it does best — delivering peat-driven single malt with real depth and character — but with the patience that only age can bring. It is not trying to be gentle or approachable. It is trying to be excellent, and it succeeds. I'm giving it an 8.2 out of 10: a genuinely rewarding dram that justifies both its price and its reputation.

Best Served

Pour it neat into a Glencairn and give it a full five minutes before your first sip. If you're on Islay, drink it looking out at the water — any water will do. If you're not, close your eyes and let it take you there. A few drops of cool water will coax out hidden layers, but taste it at full strength first. This is not a whisky that needs anything added to it. A square of very dark chocolate — 85% or higher — makes a fine companion if you want one, but the glass alone is enough.
