Bardstown Bourbon Company has become one of the most talked-about names in American whiskey over the past few years, and for good reason. Based in Bardstown, Kentucky — the self-proclaimed Bourbon Capital of the World — this operation has earned serious respect for its collaborative approach and commitment to quality. Their Straight Bourbon bottling at 48% ABV sits at a price point that puts it squarely in the premium-but-accessible category, and I think that's exactly where it deserves to be.

At 96 proof, this is bottled at a strength that tells you the distillery isn't afraid to let the whiskey do the talking. Too many bourbons in this range get watered down to 80 or 84 proof to smooth out rough edges, but Bardstown has the confidence to push it higher. That extra proof means more flavour delivery, more texture, and more of the barrel character coming through in every sip. It's a decision I respect as someone who's spent years pouring bourbon professionally — it shows intent.

This is a NAS (no age statement) release, which in bourbon country isn't necessarily a red flag. Kentucky's climate does brutal work on a barrel. The temperature swings between summer and winter — sometimes 30°C or more — force the whiskey in and out of the wood aggressively. A well-placed barrel on a higher rickhouse floor can develop remarkable complexity in four to six years that would take twice as long in a Scottish warehouse. What matters is what's in the glass, not a number on the label.

Tasting Notes

I'll be upfront — I'm not going to fabricate specific tasting notes I can't confirm. What I can tell you is that a straight bourbon at this proof, from a Kentucky distillery with Bardstown's reputation for barrel selection, is going to land in classic bourbon territory. Expect the kind of warmth and richness that the mashbill and charred new oak deliver: think caramel, vanilla, baking spice, and a bit of grain sweetness. The 48% ABV should give it enough backbone to stand up in cocktails without losing its identity neat.

The Verdict

At £63.95, this isn't an impulse buy, but it's far from unreasonable for a well-made Kentucky straight bourbon at a respectable proof. You're paying for a bottle that works in almost every context — neat after dinner, on the rocks on a warm evening, or as the backbone of a serious cocktail. Bardstown Bourbon Company has built its name on doing things properly, and this bottling reflects that ethos. I'm giving it a 7.7 out of 10. It's a solid, confident bourbon that does exactly what it should, bottled at a strength that shows respect for the drinker. It doesn't try to be something it isn't, and that honesty is worth something.

Best Served

This bourbon was practically built for an Old Fashioned. At 48% ABV, it has the muscle to hold its own against a sugar cube and a few dashes of Angostura without disappearing. Muddle your sugar with the bitters, add a couple of ounces of the Bardstown, stir over a large ice cube for about 30 seconds, and express an orange peel over the top. The proof means the bourbon's character stays front and centre as the ice slowly opens it up. If cocktails aren't your thing, try it neat with a few drops of water — that 96 proof will soften beautifully and let the barrel influence spread across your palate.
