Barrell Bourbon has built a reputation on doing things differently, and the Cask Finish Series is where they really get to flex. Tale of 2 Islands is a limited release that takes their sourced bourbon — blended from multiple distilleries, as is Barrell's signature approach — and finishes it in casks with ties to two distinct island traditions. The name is deliberately evocative, and at 59.1% ABV, this is bottled at cask strength with zero apologies. That's the Barrell way: no added water, no chill filtration, just the liquid as it comes out of the barrel.

What I find genuinely interesting about this release is the concept itself. Barrell's founder Joe Beatrice and his blending team have consistently shown that finishing bourbon in unexpected casks can produce results that challenge what you think American whiskey is capable of. The Tale of 2 Islands name suggests rum or Scotch influence — island casks that would impart coastal, tropical, or peated characteristics onto a bourbon backbone. That tension between sweet American corn distillate and whatever the finishing casks bring is where this bottle lives or dies.

At 59.1%, you're getting the full experience. This is not a bourbon you rush through. I'd strongly recommend sitting with it for ten minutes after your first pour — let it open up, let the alcohol integrate. Cask-strength bourbon rewards patience, and a few drops of water can completely transform what's in your glass. That's part of the fun with bottles like this: you get to find your own sweet spot.

Tasting Notes

I'm holding off on publishing detailed tasting notes for this one until I can spend proper time with a full bottle in a controlled setting. What I will say is that the interplay between bourbon's natural caramel and vanilla character and whatever those island cask finishes contribute makes this a genuinely complex pour. At this proof, expect intensity — this is not a gentle sipper, it's a bourbon that demands your attention.

The Verdict

At £93.25, Tale of 2 Islands sits in that tricky middle ground — not cheap, but not outrageous for a cask-strength limited release from a producer with Barrell's track record. For context, standard Barrell Bourbon batches regularly score well above their price point, and the Cask Finish Series commands a premium because the extra maturation step adds cost and complexity. I think this is worth the money. You're getting a cask-strength, limited-edition bourbon from a blender who genuinely knows what they're doing, and the concept is more than just marketing — those finishing casks are doing real work on the spirit. A 7.7 out of 10 feels right: this is a very good bourbon with genuine character, and while it may not be the single best thing Barrell has ever released, it's a bottle I'd happily buy again and recommend to anyone who wants something beyond the ordinary.

Best Served

Pour this neat in a Glencairn or copita glass and give it time. Start without water, take your first few sips, then add literally two or three drops and see how it shifts. If you want to mix with it — and I know some people will balk at putting a £93 bourbon in a cocktail — this would make an absolutely killer Old Fashioned. The cask-strength proof means it won't get buried under your sweetener and bitters, and those finishing cask characteristics will add layers you simply cannot get from a standard bourbon. Use a rich demerara syrup and Angostura, keep it simple, and let the whiskey do the talking.

Good bourbon with an interesting twist from the island cask finishing. You get salted toffee on the nose and some smoky dried fruit on the palate. I just struggle to justify north of £90 when there are excellent standard Barrell batches for less. Worth trying at a bar first.

This one caught me off guard. The dual island influence brings this unexpected mix of peat smoke and tropical fruit that somehow works at 59.1%. I usually add a few drops of water to anything north of 55% but honestly this drinks easier than the proof suggests.

I've tried most of the Cask Finish series and Tale of 2 Islands might be my favourite. The maritime character layered over that classic Barrell bourbon sweetness is fantastic. Poured this neat for a few friends and the bottle was half gone before I knew it.

I picked this up expecting a straightforward bourbon and the island cask influence threw me. The peaty, maritime notes clash a bit with the corn sweetness for my palate. Well made for sure, just not what I reach for on a weeknight. My buddy who loves Scotch-bourbon hybrids absolutely loved it though.

59.1% and it barely bites — that's impressive barrel selection right there. I get charred oak, dark chocolate, and this briny seaweed note that keeps it from being a one-note sweetness bomb. Added a single ice cube and it really opened up. Would buy again.

The concept is cool — blending two different island cask finishes into a bourbon. Nose is all brine and dried mango, palate has a nice caramel backbone. At £93 though, I expected a bit more complexity on the finish. It fades quicker than I'd like.
