Blackened x Rabbit Hole Blend of Straight Bourbon bottled at 106.59 ABV; $149 — a $149.99 expression that merits close attention.
Nose
blend of of 13-year-old straight Tennessee bourbon whiskey (mash bill of 64% corn, 36% rye) and Rabbit Hole Heigold High Rye Double Malt Kentucky straight bourbon (mash bill of 70% corn, 25% malted rye, and 5% malted barley); finished in ex-Calvados casks; 106.59 ABV; $149.99 SRP
Palate
Red apples, candied nuts. It is sweet with peaches and cherry pie crust, a simple note of pine. It is intriguing and inviting. Very dry and cloying to the teeth and tongue. Flavors burst of cherries, brown sugar, warming quickly with rye spice, and char. I found a note or two of mint and wood shavings. The finish is bright with brown sugar and cigar tobacco before slowly fading off the tongue. Warms the upper chest and hlds like a nice ember.
Finish
There is a lot of evolved complexity with this whiskey. The profile is up front with the punch of alcohol, rye spice, and charred oak. The robust nature of this one will make fans of these whiskeys very happy – you get to really experience the best of both of these.rnrnUnfortunately, this whiskey just didnt have the balance of sweet and savory that I appreciate with this spirit category. It is very nice, and I can tell if this is your type of whiskey youll really appreciate this. However, for me it lacked some in depth substance.
Verdict
Blackened x Rabbit Hole Blend of Straight Bourbon is a modest offering that, at $149.99, serves its purpose without distinction. Those seeking depth or complexity may wish to look elsewhere in this price bracket.
