Tasting Notes

Nose

It smells like bourbon. I know, this is not saying a lot but I get to taste a lot of bourbon. Some smell more like bourbon than others. That doesn’t mean it’s alcohol-ey, it means it smells like good bourbon. Rich, a browned butter, and the warm pleasantness that surrounds you when you’re well into a glass sitting with someone you like while sitting by a fire. It smells, quite frankly, like comfort. (Also, apples.)

Palate

I’ve tried a bunch of Four Roses concoctions, and they never disappoint. This one is easy-drinking and light, and yet with enough substance to do well on its own, neat, or on the rocks. It has a light syrup mouthfeel but not syrupy sweetness. It’s a little chewy. Also, apples. Again. It tastes like its smells, which is to say good bourbon, not surprising or amazing, but a solid, easy-drinking beverage. It tastes like a more expensive bottle.

Finish

A long, syrupy finish with brown sugar, caramel, and vanilla. Classic.

Four Roses has long occupied a curious position in the bourbon landscape — a brand so ubiquitous it risks being overlooked, yet one that rewards patient attention with genuine quality. The Yellow Label, their flagship expression, blends all ten of the distillery's proprietary bourbon recipes into a single bottle. At roughly $20 and 80 proof, it makes no grand claims. It simply delivers.

Appearance

The colour is a pale, honeyed yellow — reminiscent of old newspaper clippings left in the sun, or perhaps a cup of weak ginger and lemon tea. It is not a whiskey that dazzles in the glass, but there is an honest warmth to it. What you see is very much what you get.

Nose

This is where Four Roses begins to distinguish itself from the crowd. The aroma is rich and unmistakably bourbon — browned butter, a sense of warm comfort, and the gentle sweetness of baked apples. There is no aggressive alcohol burn pushing through; it simply smells like good bourbon ought to smell. One could nose this for some time without complaint.

Palate

Easy-drinking and light, yet with enough substance to hold one's interest. The mouthfeel carries a light syrup quality without tipping into cloying sweetness — slightly chewy, with those apple notes returning alongside a soft warmth. It tastes, frankly, like a more expensive bottle. Whether taken neat or over a single large cube of ice, it remains composed and approachable throughout.

Finish

Surprisingly long for a bourbon at this price point. Brown sugar, caramel, and vanilla linger in classic fashion — the sort of finish that invites another sip rather than demanding one. It is textbook bourbon, executed with quiet confidence.

Verdict

Four Roses Yellow Label is the little black dress of bourbon — appropriate for virtually every occasion and flattering in any company. What the distillery has achieved here is rather remarkable: they have taken everything unpleasant about whiskey and simply removed it, leaving behind a spirit that is clean, balanced, and thoroughly enjoyable.

At around $20, the value proposition borders on the absurd. This is a solid, reliable, easy-drinking bourbon that punches well above its weight class. Whether you are introducing a friend to the category or seeking something dependable for a Tuesday evening, Four Roses delivers without fuss or pretension. A workhorse in the very best sense of the word.
