Bourbon Review: Green River Kentucky Straight Wheated Bourbon

6 /10
EDITOR
Type: Bourbon
ABV: 45% ABV; mash bill: 70% corn, 21% wheat, and 9% ma

Tasting Notes

Nose

It opens with a scent of wheat and mown grass, with a slightly sour quality. There’s a harshness to the smell, and when I can get past it I can pick out a faint note of cigar.

Palate

It opens light, with a slightly sour note of wheat. The sweetness of the corn is still there, and with the richer flavors of the wheat and back note of malt, it takes on the taste of sweetened, brunette coffee or maple syrup. The finish takes on a little more sourness, and feels more like sweet tea or biscotti.

45% ABV; mash bill: 70% corn, 21% wheat, and 9% malted 2 and 6-row barley; MSRP 37.99. It opens with a scent of wheat and mown grass, with a slightly sour quality. There’s a harshness to the smell, and when I can get past it I can pick out a faint note of cigar. This is a pleasant riff on their straight bourbon which gives plenty to enjoy. The use of wheat gives some sourness to the taste, which l found to open up some decent flavor notes. There’s nothing harsh or medicinal to bring down the taste. At the same time, while it does everything well there’s nothing truly exceptional about it. Still, it’s priced aggressively and delivers solid value. If you’re curious about wheated bourbon, I think this is an easy recommendation. Verdict

Green River Kentucky Straight Wheated Bourbon is a modest offering that serves its purpose without distinction. Those seeking depth or complexity may wish to look elsewhere in this price bracket.
