We turn our attention to Wyoming Whiskey 1872 Straight Bourbon, a release from ies can compete with the major labels even in the ultra-premium category bottled at 58% abv), 750ml MSRP $399. At $399.99, 150 total bottles produced, Product of Wyoming, it enters a competitive field.
Nose
Similar to the appearance of an Amontillado Sherry or a rich cognac. The color of almond skin and an aged still. Aromas of cooked caramel, vanilla beans, orange zest and angel food cake. The limited run of 150 bottles is a shame because this whiskey deserves to be tried by more than the select few who will be able to get their hands on a bottle. This bourbon is very smooth but retains an engrossing aroma and flavor. With this brand Wyoming Whiskey has offered proof that smaller distilleries can compete with the major labels even in the ultra-premium category.
Palate
Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by Whiskeyful or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
Finish
Flavors of sweet breads, coco, molasses and white pepper. Coats the mouth with a feeling similar to that given by cotton candy. Finish is very smooth despite the higher proof. Notes of vanilla and sassafras linger even after the portion is long gone.
Verdict
Wyoming Whiskey 1872 Straight Bourbon is an exceptional expression that stands among the finest in its category. It rewards patience and attention in equal measure, and we recommend it without reservation — though at $399.99, 150 total bottles produced, Product of Wyoming, one expects nothing less.
