Bushmills holds a particular place in my affections. The Old Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim has been producing whiskey since long before most Scottish operations were even a glint in a copper pot's eye — their licence dates to 1608, making it one of the oldest licensed distilleries in the world. Whether you consider that claim definitive or merely traditional, there is no disputing that Bushmills has been doing this for a very long time, and the 10 Year Old Single Malt is, to my mind, the expression where that experience shows most clearly for the money.

This is an Irish single malt, triple-distilled and matured for a full decade. At 40% ABV, it sits at the legal minimum, which I will admit gives me pause — I would love to see what this liquid could do at 43% or 46% without chill filtration. But let us judge what is in the glass, not what might have been.

What strikes me about Bushmills 10 is its composure. This is not a whiskey trying to be something it is not. The triple distillation, a hallmark of Irish whiskey production, lends a lightness and smoothness to the spirit that makes it immediately approachable without ever feeling hollow. There is substance here. At ten years of age, the wood has had time to contribute meaningfully, and you can expect a gentle interplay between the malt character and whatever influence the cask has imparted over that decade of quiet maturation.

For those coming from Scotch, as many of my readers do, think of this as a different conversation entirely. Where a Speyside malt might lean into orchard fruit and honey with a certain richness, Bushmills 10 tends toward a cleaner, more direct style. It is malt-forward, approachable, and polished. The triple distillation removes much of the heavier congeners, leaving a spirit that favours elegance over muscle.

The Verdict

At £44.75, Bushmills 10 Year Old sits in a competitive space. You could buy a respectable Speyside or Highland single malt for similar money. But that rather misses the point. This is an Irish single malt with its own identity and its own pleasures, and it delivers them with consistency and quiet confidence. It is a whiskey I have returned to many times over the years, and one I keep recommending to both newcomers and seasoned drinkers who want something honest and well-made without drama.

A score of 7.5 out of 10 reflects genuine quality and good value. It loses half a mark for the 40% bottling strength — a small but meaningful compromise — and another for the fact that, pleasant as it is, it does not quite reach the complexity that would place it among the truly memorable. But as a daily dram, a reliable bottle for the shelf, and a fine introduction to Irish single malt whiskey, it earns its place with room to spare.

Best Served

I prefer this neat, at room temperature, perhaps with five minutes in the glass to let it open up. If you find the 40% ABV a touch tight on the nose, a small splash of water — no more than a teaspoon — will coax out a little more character. It also makes a very respectable Highball with good soda water and a twist of lemon peel, particularly in warmer months. Avoid drowning it in ice; you will lose the malt character that makes it worth buying in the first place.
