There's a particular kind of confidence that comes from slapping a luxury automotive design house's name on a bottle of blended Scotch. Chivas Regal 18 Year Old Pininfarina Level 1 is exactly that kind of statement — a collaboration between Chivas and Pininfarina, the Italian design firm best known for shaping Ferraris. Whether you think that's inspired or cynical probably says more about you than it does about the whisky. For my part, I think the liquid earns its keep.

Let's get the obvious out of the way: you're paying a premium here. At £199, this sits well above the standard Chivas 18, which you can find for roughly half that. The difference is the Pininfarina design treatment — a striking bottle and packaging that genuinely looks the part on a drinks cabinet. But Chivas have been smart enough not to just dress up the same product. The Level 1 expression is built around a specific flavour direction, curated in collaboration with Pininfarina's design philosophy of clean lines and balanced proportion. It's an interesting concept, even if it sounds like marketing speak on paper.

At its core, this is still an 18-year-old blended Scotch bottled at 40% ABV. That age statement does real work. Eighteen years of maturation in the Chivas house style means you're getting a whisky built from a substantial inventory of well-aged malt and grain, blended with the kind of precision that Strathisla and the Chivas blending team are rightly known for. The blended Scotch category doesn't always get the respect it deserves from the single malt crowd, but expressions like this remind you why master blenders exist. Consistency at this level of complexity is genuinely difficult.

Tasting Notes

I'd encourage you to approach this one without preconceptions. As an 18-year-old blend at this price point, expect a rich, rounded character with the kind of depth that only comes from extended maturation. The Chivas house style leans towards dried fruit, honey, and subtle spice, and at 18 years you can anticipate a smooth, polished delivery. This is a whisky designed for contemplation rather than quick pours.

The Verdict

Is this worth nearly £200? That depends on what you're buying it for. As a drinking whisky alone, the standard Chivas 18 offers extraordinary value and much of the same quality. But the Pininfarina Level 1 isn't just a drinking whisky — it's a piece of design collaboration, a gift-worthy bottle, and a genuinely attractive object. The liquid inside is excellent 18-year-old blended Scotch, and the presentation elevates the whole experience. I'm giving it an 8.4 out of 10. The whisky itself is assured and sophisticated, the kind of blend that makes you slow down and pay attention. The design partnership adds a layer of desirability that justifies the premium, particularly if you're buying this as a gift or a centrepiece bottle. It's not the best value Chivas on the shelf, but it might be the most memorable.

Best Served

Pour this neat into a Glencairn or a wide-rimmed tumbler at room temperature. Give it five minutes to open up — an 18-year-old blend rewards patience. If you want to add water, a few drops will do; this isn't a cask-strength bruiser that needs taming. For a more sociable serve, it works beautifully in a refined highball with quality soda water and a twist of orange peel — the citrus plays well against the aged sweetness without drowning the complexity you've paid for.
