There are bottles that announce themselves before you've even poured a dram, and the Dalmore King Alexander III is unquestionably one of them. Named for the Scottish king who granted the Clan Mackenzie its stag emblem — the very symbol that adorns every Dalmore bottle — this Highland single malt carries a weight of expectation that few NAS expressions dare to shoulder. At £214, it asks a serious question of the buyer. Having spent considerable time with this whisky, I believe it answers that question more often than not.

The King Alexander III is built on a principle that has become something of a Dalmore signature: multi-cask finishing. This is not a simple double-matured expression. The whisky draws from six distinct cask types — ex-bourbon, Matusalem oloroso sherry, Madeira, Marsala, port, and Cabernet Sauvignon wine barriques. That is an ambitious programme of wood management, and it demands real skill from the blending team to ensure the result is coherent rather than confused. The fact that this whisky holds together as well as it does speaks to genuine craft.

At 40% ABV, some will argue the bottling strength is conservative for a whisky at this price point, and I have some sympathy with that view. A few extra percentage points would have given the spirit more room to express itself, particularly given the richness that six finishing casks ought to deliver. It is a minor frustration in what is otherwise a carefully considered release.

As a Highland single malt with no age statement, the King Alexander III relies entirely on character rather than a number on the box to justify its position. This is a whisky that leans into opulence — dark fruit, spiced oak, and a layered sweetness are hallmarks of the style Dalmore has cultivated over decades. The sherry and port influences tend to drive the profile, with the wine cask finishes adding texture and complexity beneath.

Tasting Notes

Specific tasting notes for this expression are not available at the time of writing. What I can say is that the King Alexander III sits firmly in the rich, sherried, fruit-forward tradition of Highland whisky-making. Expect warmth, dried fruit character, and a pronounced oak influence from that extensive cask programme. This is not a light, floral dram — it is a whisky that fills the glass with presence.

The Verdict

At 8.3 out of 10, the Dalmore King Alexander III earns its place among the more compelling NAS single malts on the market. The six-cask finishing is not a gimmick — it produces a genuinely layered whisky with real depth. The price is not insignificant, and the 40% ABV remains my one reservation, but the overall quality of the liquid is difficult to dispute. For those who appreciate rich, sherried Highland malts with a sense of occasion, this delivers. It is a bottle for the shelf you reach for when the evening calls for something with substance and a story behind it.

Best Served

Pour this neat in a Glencairn glass and give it ten minutes to open. The complexity here rewards patience — rushing it would be a disservice to the work those six cask types have done. If you find the richness needs a touch of lift, a few drops of water will coax out the subtler notes without dismantling the structure. This is an after-dinner whisky through and through, best enjoyed slowly and without distraction.
