I'll admit, when a bottle lands on my bar from a state not exactly synonymous with rye whiskey, my ears prick up. Driftless Glen 51 Rye Wisconsin Straight Rye Whiskey is one of those bottles that makes you pay attention — a 51% ABV straight rye coming out of Wisconsin, bottled at a proof point that tells me the distiller wants you to actually taste what they've made rather than hiding behind barrel strength heat or watering things down to a polite 40%.

Let's talk about what makes this interesting from a technical standpoint. To carry the "straight rye" designation, this whiskey must contain at least 51% rye grain in its mashbill, be distilled to no more than 160 proof, entered the barrel at no higher than 125 proof, and aged a minimum of two years with no added colouring or flavouring. The "51" in the name is a neat bit of branding — it references that 51% ABV bottling strength, but it also nods to the legal minimum rye content required for the category. Whether Driftless Glen pushes well beyond that 51% rye floor in their mashbill, we don't know for certain, but the result in the glass speaks for itself.

Wisconsin might not be Kentucky, but it has something Kentucky doesn't: genuine temperature extremes. Those brutal Midwestern winters and warm summers create significant barrel interaction, with the whiskey expanding deep into the wood during heat and contracting back during cold snaps. That seasonal cycling can produce surprisingly mature-tasting whiskey in a relatively short timeframe. For a NAS release, this one carries itself with confidence.

Tasting Notes

I'd encourage you to approach this one with an open mind. At 51% ABV, there's enough proof to deliver real body and intensity without needing a PhD in cask-strength whiskey to enjoy it. A splash of water opens it up nicely if you prefer, but I found it rewarding neat. The rye grain character comes through clearly — this isn't a bourbon pretending to be a rye. It owns its category.

The Verdict

At £66.95, Driftless Glen 51 Rye sits in a competitive bracket. You could spend that money on a well-known Kentucky rye and get something perfectly reliable. But reliable isn't why most of us got into whiskey, is it? This is a craft distillery making a genuine straight rye with real character, bottled at a proof point that respects the drinker. It's not trying to be something it isn't. For anyone curious about what American rye whiskey looks like outside the big-name distilleries, this is a worthy bottle to have on your shelf. I'm scoring it 7.9 out of 10 — a well-made rye that delivers on its promises and makes a strong case for Wisconsin as serious whiskey country.

Best Served

This is a rye that was born for a Manhattan. The 51% ABV means it won't get buried under sweet vermouth — two parts Driftless Glen, one part good Italian sweet vermouth, a couple of dashes of Angostura, stirred over ice and strained into a coupe. The rye spice will cut through the sweetness beautifully. If cocktails aren't your thing, try it neat with a few drops of water and give it five minutes to breathe. It rewards patience.
