Glen Moray has long occupied an interesting position in the Speyside landscape. Sitting in Elgin, at the heart of whisky country, this distillery has historically been overshadowed by louder names — the Macallans, the Glenlivets, the Glenfiddichs of the world. That's always struck me as a missed opportunity for drinkers, because what Glen Moray does consistently well is produce approachable, honest Speyside malt at prices that don't require a second mortgage. The 15 Year Old expression is, to my mind, where this distillery starts to show what it's truly capable of.

At fifteen years of age, you're getting into territory where the wood has had genuine time to work. This is a Speyside single malt, which means you should expect the classic regional signatures — a certain roundness, a gentleness, fruit-forward character over peat or smoke. Glen Moray has never tried to be anything other than what it is: an accessible, well-mannered Speyside. The 15 Year Old takes that house style and simply gives it more room to breathe. The additional years in cask lend a depth and composure that the younger expressions, pleasant as they are, can't quite match.

Bottled at 40% ABV, this sits at the minimum legal strength for Scotch whisky, and I'll be straightforward — I'd have liked to see this at 43% or even 46%. A whisky with fifteen years of maturation has earned the right to be presented with a little more muscle. That said, at this strength, it remains an exceptionally easy dram to sit with, and there's something to be said for a whisky that doesn't demand your full attention but rewards it when given.

What to Expect

Without specific tasting notes to hand, what I can tell you is this: a 15-year-old Speyside single malt from Glen Moray is going to deliver the kind of warm, malt-driven character the region is known for. Expect orchard fruits, a certain honeyed sweetness from the extended maturation, and a gentle oakiness that comes from more than a decade in wood. This is not a whisky that will challenge you — it's one that will welcome you. And sometimes that's exactly what you want.

The Verdict

At £60.25, the Glen Moray 15 Year Old represents genuinely good value. Try finding another 15-year-old Speyside single malt at this price point — you'll struggle. The age-to-price ratio here is difficult to argue with, and while the 40% ABV leaves me wishing for a touch more body, the overall package is impressive. This is a whisky that punches well above its price tag, offering the kind of mature, composed drinking experience that many distilleries would charge significantly more for. I'm giving it an 8 out of 10 — a strong, reliable dram that deserves more attention than it typically receives. Glen Moray remains one of Speyside's best-kept secrets, and this expression is a fine argument for why that shouldn't be the case.

Best Served

Neat, at room temperature, with a small splash of water if you wish to open it up — particularly given the 40% ABV, water should be added sparingly if at all. This is a contemplative evening dram, the sort of thing you pour after dinner with no particular agenda. A Glencairn glass will serve it well. If you're in the mood for something longer, a Highball with quality soda water and a twist of lemon would make a surprisingly elegant serve — the Speyside character holds up beautifully with a little dilution and fizz.
