Glen Moray is one of those distilleries that rarely commands the spotlight, yet consistently delivers honest Speyside whisky at a price point that makes it genuinely accessible. The Classic expression — offered here as a gift set with glasses — represents the distillery's entry-level single malt, and I think it deserves more attention than it typically receives.

Situated in Elgin, in the heart of Speyside, Glen Moray has been distilling since the late 19th century. The Classic is a no-age-statement bottling, matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks, which is very much the house style at this level. At 40% ABV, it sits at the minimum threshold for Scotch, and while I'd always welcome a touch more strength, there's an honesty to what's being presented here. This isn't trying to be something it's not.

What to Expect

The Classic sits squarely in the lighter, more approachable end of the Speyside spectrum. Think soft cereals, gentle vanilla sweetness, and that clean, slightly honeyed character that well-made bourbon-cask-matured Speyside malts tend to deliver. It's not a whisky that will challenge you or demand your full attention — and that's perfectly fine. Not every dram needs to be a philosophical exercise. Sometimes you want something straightforward and well-made, and Glen Moray Classic fits that brief comfortably.

The inclusion of two glasses in this set nudges it firmly into gift territory, and frankly, at £36.25 for a single malt Scotch with glassware, the value proposition is difficult to argue with. For someone beginning to explore single malts beyond the usual Glenfiddich or Glenlivet recommendations, this is a sensible step sideways — similar in profile but offering a slightly different perspective on what Speyside can produce at an everyday level.

The Verdict

I've scored this 7.7 out of 10, and I want to be clear about what that reflects. This isn't a whisky that will redefine your understanding of single malt. It doesn't have the complexity of aged stock or the punch of cask-strength bottlings. What it does have is consistency, drinkability, and genuine value for money. The gift set format adds practical appeal — you're getting two decent glasses alongside a reliable Speyside malt for under forty pounds. That's a strong position in a market where prices have drifted steadily upward.

For the whisky itself, the Classic delivers exactly what you'd hope from an entry-level Speyside: clean, sweet, malt-forward, and easy to enjoy without overthinking. It's the sort of bottle that earns its place on the shelf by being reached for regularly rather than admired from a distance. There's real merit in that.

Best Served

I'd suggest this neat at room temperature, or with a small splash of water if you find the sweetness a touch forward. It also makes a very respectable Highball — the light, clean character pairs well with good soda water and a twist of lemon peel. On a warm afternoon, that's a genuinely enjoyable serve that lets the malt's simplicity work in its favour.
