Glenfiddich needs no introduction from me — or anyone else in this industry. The Dufftown distillery has been the standard-bearer for Speyside single malt since William Grant first ran spirit from those copper pot stills on Christmas Day 1887. So when they release a bottling to mark 125 years of continuous production, you sit up and pay attention. The Glenfiddich 125th Anniversary Edition, bottled in 2012, is exactly the kind of commemorative release that could easily coast on reputation alone. It doesn't.

This is a no-age-statement expression bottled at 43% ABV, which tells me Glenfiddich's malt master at the time — the formidable Brian Kinsman — was working with a vatting of casks selected for character rather than age. NAS releases divide opinion, but in the hands of a distillery with this depth of warehouse stock, I've always found they can offer something genuinely interesting. You're paying for the blender's craft, not a number on the box.

At £199, this sits in a space that demands justification. You're above the core range, well into 'occasion bottle' territory. What you're getting is a piece of Glenfiddich's history — a snapshot of how the distillery chose to represent itself at a milestone moment. That alone tells you something about intent. This wasn't a throwaway release. It was a statement.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specific tasting notes I don't have to hand for this particular bottling, but I can speak to what you should expect from the house style and the nature of this release. Glenfiddich's DNA runs through everything they produce: that signature pear-drop fruitiness, a clean and approachable malt character, and a lightness of touch that makes Speyside whisky so universally drinkable. A commemorative vatting like this would almost certainly showcase the distillery's range — expect layers that reward patience in the glass. At 43%, there's enough weight to carry complexity without requiring water, though a few drops will open it up if you're inclined.

The Verdict

I'm giving this an 8.2 out of 10. That reflects a whisky that delivers on its promise without overreaching. The 125th Anniversary Edition is confident, well-constructed, and carries the weight of its occasion with the kind of quiet authority I associate with Glenfiddich at their best. It doesn't try to be something it isn't — no cask-strength theatrics, no exotic wood finishes for the sake of it. It is simply a very good Speyside single malt, assembled with care to mark a moment that mattered. The price is fair for a limited commemorative bottling from a distillery of this stature, and it holds its own against comparable releases from the period. If you find one on the secondary market, it's worth the investment — both as a dram and as a piece of Scotch whisky history.

Best Served

Neat, in a Glencairn, at room temperature. Give it ten minutes to breathe after pouring. If you want to explore further, a small splash of still water — no more than a teaspoon — will let the malt speak more clearly. This is not a whisky for cocktails or ice. It was made to be sat with, and it rewards that respect.
