Indian whisky has, for too long, been dismissed by the old guard as little more than a curiosity — something to acknowledge politely at tastings before returning to the familiar comforts of Speyside or Islay. That view is increasingly difficult to defend. Godawan Series 01 Rich and Rounded, a PX Sherry Cask single malt bottled at 46% ABV, is the sort of bottle that forces you to reconsider your assumptions about what the subcontinent can produce.

The Godawan range takes its name from the Great Indian Bustard, an endangered bird native to the Rajasthani desert — a fitting emblem for a whisky that feels both rare and purposeful. This Series 01 expression has been finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, a maturation choice that signals intent. PX casks are not subtle instruments. They deliver dense sweetness, dried fruit character, and a richness that can overwhelm a less confident spirit. The fact that this bottling carries the descriptor "Rich and Rounded" tells you the producers have leaned into that influence rather than fighting it.

At 46%, this sits at a strength that I find increasingly sensible for single malts in this category. It is enough to carry flavour with conviction without tipping into cask-strength territory that might alienate newer drinkers. There is no age statement here, which in the context of Indian whisky production is neither surprising nor necessarily a concern — the accelerated maturation that comes with a warmer climate means that relatively young spirit can achieve a depth of character that would take considerably longer in a Scottish warehouse. The interplay between climate, wood, and time operates on a different schedule in Rajasthan than it does in Dufftown.

The PX sherry cask influence is the defining feature of this expression. Pedro Ximénez is the richest, sweetest style of sherry cask available to a whisky maker, and when it works well, it produces a whisky of considerable depth — think Christmas cake, dark chocolate, stewed stone fruits, and a lingering sweetness that never quite crosses into cloying. That is the promise of this bottling, and the "Rich and Rounded" descriptor suggests it delivers on that promise with some confidence.

The Verdict

At £62.75, Godawan Series 01 Rich and Rounded sits in competitive territory. You could spend similar money on a reliable Speyside or a decent entry-level sherried Scotch. What this bottle offers instead is something genuinely different — a single malt shaped by a climate and a terroir that Scottish distillers simply cannot replicate. I have been consistently impressed by the ambition of the new wave of Indian single malts, and this PX-finished expression represents exactly the kind of bold, flavour-forward whisky that is winning converts. A rating of 7.8 out of 10 reflects a whisky that is doing something interesting, doing it well, and offering genuine value for the experience. It is not yet competing with the very finest sherried malts on the planet, but it is making a serious case for itself.

Best Served

I would recommend this neat, at room temperature, in a Glencairn glass. Give it ten minutes after pouring — the PX influence tends to open up beautifully with a little air. If you find the richness slightly overwhelming, a few drops of water will help separate the layers. This would also make an exceptional Highball for those warmer evenings — the sherry sweetness pairs remarkably well with good soda water and a twist of orange peel.
