Korean whisky remains one of the most genuinely exciting frontiers in single malt. I say that not as someone chasing novelty for its own sake — I've spent enough years in Scottish distilleries to be naturally sceptical of new world claims — but because the best examples from South Korea demonstrate a seriousness of intent that demands attention. Ki One Cask 0200, a single cask bottling from the 2021 vintage released exclusively through The Whisky Exchange, is precisely the kind of release that tests whether that seriousness translates into the glass.
At 57.1% ABV, this is a cask strength offering, uncompromising and unapologetic. That's a bold move for any distillery still building its reputation, because cask strength hides nothing. Every decision made during production — the cut points, the wood selection, the warehouse conditions — is laid bare. It's a statement of confidence, and I respect that.
What we know is deliberately limited. This is a single cask release, numbered 0200, drawn from the 2021 vintage. There's no age statement, which for a relatively young distilling nation is unsurprising. The exclusivity to The Whisky Exchange suggests a hand-picked cask, selected for a retailer whose buying team has an excellent track record of identifying quality at source. That relationship alone lends this bottle a degree of credibility that a general release might not carry.
What to Expect
Korean single malts tend to occupy interesting territory — influenced by the extremes of the Korean climate, where hot, humid summers and cold winters can accelerate maturation in ways that Scottish warehouses simply cannot replicate. At cask strength, you should expect an intense, concentrated spirit with real weight and presence. A few drops of water will be essential to open this up and let the character of the cask and the spirit reveal themselves properly. Don't rush it.
At just under £95, this sits in a competitive bracket. You're paying a premium for scarcity and exclusivity, certainly, but also for the opportunity to experience Korean single malt whisky at its most unfiltered. For collectors and the genuinely curious, that's a fair exchange.
The Verdict
I'll be honest — I approached this bottle with the measured caution I bring to any emerging whisky region. But Ki One Cask 0200 has genuine substance. The decision to bottle at cask strength, from a single cask, for a respected independent retailer, tells me the people behind this whisky are not interested in shortcuts. At 7.7 out of 10, this is a confident and worthy addition to any collection that looks beyond the established old guard. It won't replace your favourite Speyside, and it isn't trying to. What it offers is something more valuable: proof that Korean whisky is a category worth taking seriously.
Best Served
Neat, in a Glencairn, with a few drops of still water to tame that 57.1% ABV. Give it ten minutes in the glass before you commit to a verdict — cask strength whisky at this concentration needs time to breathe and settle. If you're feeling adventurous, a Japanese-style Highball with quality soda water and a strip of citrus peel would complement the intensity rather well.

Proper cask strength punch

At 57.1% this doesn't mess around — big tropical fruit and honey on the nose that opens up beautifully with a few drops of water. For a young Korean single malt I'm genuinely impressed by the complexity here. The Whisky Exchange exclusivity makes it a nice bottle to show off at tastings too.

Interesting but pricey for what it is

Picked this up out of curiosity since I'd never tried Korean whisky before. There's a nice malty sweetness and some orchard fruit going on, and the high ABV carries the flavours well neat. At £95 though, I think you're paying a premium for the novelty — I'd want a bit more depth for that money.

Solid start from Ki One
7/10
Had this neat over a couple of sessions. It's young and you can tell — there's a slight spirity edge at full strength that takes some coaxing to get past. But once you add water the single malt character comes through nicely with baked apple and light oak. A promising dram from a distillery worth keeping an eye on.

Korean whisky is no joke
9/10
I grabbed cask 0200 on a whim and it's easily one of my favourite discoveries this year. Loads of vanilla and stone fruit, with a spicy kick from the cask strength that just lingers. Added a splash of water and got this gorgeous cereal note underneath everything. If this is where Ki One is starting, I can't wait to see what they do with older stock.
