Campbeltown is a place that earns its whisky the hard way. Three distilleries cling to a peninsula that juts into the Atlantic like a clenched fist, and every dram that comes out of that town carries the weather in its bones. Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 13 is no exception. At 58.6% ABV and carrying no age statement, this is a whisky that asks you to meet it where it stands — no apologies, no concessions.

The Heavily Peated series from Kilkerran has built a quiet following among peat enthusiasts who want something other than the Islay playbook. Campbeltown peat is its own creature. Where Islay often gives you maritime iodine and medicinal punch, Campbeltown tends toward something oilier, earthier, more grounded in the land itself. Batch 13 continues that tradition at cask strength, which means this bottle has real weight behind it. At just under fifty quid, it sits in a price bracket that would be generous for a standard single malt — for a cask strength release with this kind of character, it borders on a steal.

Tasting Notes

I won't pretend to give you a paint-by-numbers breakdown of every aroma molecule here. What I will say is that the Heavily Peated designation is honest. This is a whisky that wears its smoke openly, but the Campbeltown DNA — that coastal, slightly briny, oily quality — keeps it from becoming a one-note bonfire. The cask strength delivery means you can add water to taste and watch the whisky open up in stages, or you can take it neat and feel the full force of whatever the distillers decided to put in those casks. NAS releases live or die by blending skill, and whoever assembled Batch 13 understood the assignment.

The Verdict

I've spent enough time on the Kintyre peninsula to know that Campbeltown whisky carries a particular stubbornness — a refusal to be anything other than itself. Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 13 has that quality in spades. It is cask strength without being aggressive, heavily peated without being exhausting, and priced without pretension. At 7.5 out of 10, this is a strong recommendation. It loses half a point for being NAS in a world where I'd love to know what age of spirit is doing this much work, but that's a philosophical gripe more than a practical one. The liquid in the glass is confident, well-constructed, and deeply satisfying. If you're curious about peat beyond Islay, or if you already know what Campbeltown can do and want another reason to keep coming back, Batch 13 gives you exactly that.

Best Served

Pour this into a Glencairn with five or ten drops of cool water and let it sit for a few minutes. Cask strength peat needs a moment to breathe before it shows you everything. On a cold evening, near a window where you can hear rain — that's the setting this whisky was made for. A square of dark chocolate, seventy percent or higher, is the only accompaniment it needs.
