There was a time — not so long ago — when the phrase 'Swiss whisky' would have drawn a raised eyebrow from even the most open-minded drinker. That time is passing. Langatun has been among the most compelling voices arguing that great single malt can come from unexpected places, and this 2017 vintage, matured for six years in Rioja casks, is a persuasive piece of evidence.

At 49.12% ABV, this sits just below cask strength territory — enough muscle to carry the weight of that wine cask influence without bulldozing whatever the spirit brings on its own terms. It's a bottling strength that suggests confidence from whoever made the call: no need to push it to a round number, no need to water it back to 40%. They've let the whisky land where it wanted to land, and I respect that.

What to Expect

Six years is young by Scotch standards, but context matters. Smaller casks, different climates, and active wood policies mean that age statements from continental European distilleries don't map neatly onto what we expect from a Scottish twelve or fifteen year old. A Rioja cask — a red wine barrel that will have held Tempranillo-based wines — is going to work the spirit hard. Expect this to lean into that wine-cask character: think richness, think fruit-forward weight, think colour deeper than you'd normally see at six years of age. The Rioja influence will be the dominant narrative here, and at this age, the interplay between cask and cereal spirit should be direct and vivid rather than subtle.

The ABV gives you room to add water incrementally. I'd encourage it. A few drops will open up whatever the distillery character contributes beneath that wine cask blanket, and with a whisky like this, finding that balance between cask influence and spirit identity is half the pleasure.

The Verdict

At £99.25, this is not an impulse purchase, and I won't pretend otherwise. You are paying a premium that reflects both the realities of small-batch Swiss production and the relative scarcity of the product outside its home market. Whether that represents value depends on what you're looking for. If you want a safe, predictable dram, there are excellent Scotch single malts at this price that will deliver exactly what the label promises. But if you're the sort of drinker who finds genuine pleasure in tasting what whisky makers outside the traditional heartlands are achieving — and if wine cask maturation is a style you enjoy — this is a well-executed example that justifies its place on the shelf.

I'm giving this a 7.8 out of 10. It's a whisky that does what it sets out to do with conviction. The Rioja cask maturation is clearly the centrepiece, the bottling strength is well-judged, and there's an honesty to releasing a six year old at its natural strength rather than dressing it up as something it isn't. It loses a mark or two on sheer value — the price-to-age ratio will give some buyers pause — but as a showcase of what modern European single malt distilling can produce, it earns its score and then some.

Best Served

Neat, in a Glencairn, with a small jug of water on the side. Start without water to get the full impact of that Rioja cask at natural strength, then add a few drops at a time. At 49.12%, this whisky will change character meaningfully with dilution, and finding your preferred balance is part of the experience. A single large ice cube would also work on a warm evening, but I'd avoid drowning it in a Highball — there's too much going on here to lose it in soda.

Nose is all red berries and a hint of dark chocolate, which I really enjoyed. Palate has some nice toffee and wine-soaked oak notes. My issue is the £99 price tag for a 6 year old — I keep comparing it to what else I could get for that money, and it's a tough sell when solid Speysides exist at half the price.

Picked this up on a whim and it's become one of my favourite bottles this year. The Rioja maturation brings out these gorgeous raisin and cinnamon notes I wasn't expecting. I drink it neat and it's silky smooth despite the 49% ABV. If you see one, grab it before word gets out.

I was skeptical about a Swiss single malt but this Langatun genuinely surprised me. The Rioja cask gives it this lovely dried cherry and spiced plum character that lingers nicely. At nearly 50% ABV it carries some heat but nothing harsh — just add a few drops of water and it opens right up.

I appreciate what Langatun is doing and the Rioja cask concept is fun. You get red fruit and baking spice up front, which is nice. But for me it finishes a bit short and thin, and at nearly a hundred quid I expected more depth from a single malt. Happy I tried it, but one bottle was enough for me.

The red wine cask influence is front and centre — lots of berry jam and a touch of vanilla on the nose. On the palate it's pleasant enough, with some dried fruit and mild spice, but it feels a bit young still. Give Langatun another few years of aging and I think they'll really have something special.

I poured this for friends after a big meal and everyone wanted to know what it was. Rich and fruity with that unmistakable wine cask sweetness — think stewed plums and a whisper of nutmeg. The finish has a nice dry tannic quality from the Rioja barrel that keeps it from being too sweet. Really well balanced for a younger whisky.
