Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength is one of those bottles that sorts whisky drinkers into two camps almost immediately. You either get it or you don't — and if you're reading this, I suspect you already know which side you're on. Batch 016 lands at a punchy 58.5% ABV, and at £69.95, it represents genuinely good value for a cask strength single malt from one of Islay's most iconic distilleries.

For the uninitiated, cask strength means this whisky goes from barrel to bottle without being diluted down to the standard 40-43% you see on most shelves. What you're getting is the full, uncut experience — every ounce of character that ten years in oak has developed. That's significant, because Laphroaig at full proof is a completely different animal to the standard 10. There's more weight, more texture, more of everything that makes this distillery polarising and brilliant in equal measure.

The Cask Strength batches have built something of a cult following over the years, and for good reason. Each batch varies slightly depending on the casks selected, which means Batch 016 is its own thing — a snapshot of what the distillery was producing a decade ago, bottled without compromise. At 58.5%, this particular batch sits in the mid-range for the series, which tends to fluctuate between the high fifties and low sixties.

Tasting Notes

I'd encourage you to spend time with this one. At cask strength, Laphroaig rewards patience. Add water in tiny increments — a few drops at a time — and you'll find the whisky opens up dramatically at different dilution points. The 58.5% ABV means there's real headroom to explore here. Neat, it's bold and assertive. With water, layers start to separate and reveal themselves. This is a whisky that changes in the glass over twenty minutes, and that's part of the fun.

The Verdict

At £69.95, Batch 016 is a no-brainer for anyone who already enjoys Laphroaig. You're getting cask strength Islay whisky at ten years old for under seventy quid — try finding that kind of value elsewhere. The cask strength series consistently delivers more depth and complexity than the standard bottling, and the higher ABV means your bottle effectively goes further since most people will add at least a splash of water.

I'm giving this a 7.6 out of 10. It's a confident, well-made cask strength bottling that does exactly what you want it to do. It doesn't reinvent the wheel — it doesn't need to. This is Laphroaig being Laphroaig, turned up to full volume. The only reason it doesn't score higher is that some batches in this series have been truly exceptional, and Batch 016, while very good, sits comfortably in the solid-to-excellent range rather than reaching for legendary status. That said, if this is your first cask strength Laphroaig, you'll wonder why you ever drank it at 40%.

Best Served

Neat with a few drops of water, added gradually. Start with the whisky as-is, take your time, then add water drop by drop until you find your sweet spot — for most people that'll be somewhere around 50% ABV equivalent. This is not a cocktail whisky. At cask strength, Laphroaig deserves your full attention in a proper Glencairn or tulip glass. If you absolutely must mix it, a simple Penicillin cocktail can work — the honey-ginger syrup and lemon juice stand up to the intensity — but honestly, save your cocktail budget for something cheaper and drink this one straight.
