There are certain Speyside distilleries that independent bottlers return to again and again, and Linkwood is near the top of that list. This 8 Year Old expression, selected and bottled by Carn Mor at a punchy 51.2% ABV, is the kind of release that rewards those willing to look beyond the usual supermarket shelf. At £61.95, it sits in a competitive bracket — but I think it earns its place there.

Carn Mor have built a solid reputation for sourcing well-aged casks and bottling them without chill-filtration or excessive colouring, and this Linkwood feels like a continuation of that philosophy. The higher strength is a welcome decision. Too many independent bottlings of younger Speyside malts get dialled down to 46%, which can strip out the texture that makes them interesting. Here, at just over 51%, you get the full weight of the spirit — and with a malt like Linkwood, that matters.

Speyside as a region often gets painted in broad strokes: light, fruity, approachable. That is true enough as a starting point, but it undersells the variety you find once you start exploring single cask and small batch releases. Linkwood, in my experience, tends to sit in the more elegant corner of the region — a spirit that favours subtlety over force, even when bottled at cask strength. An 8 year old expression will naturally carry more youthful energy than a sherried 15 year old, but that is not a flaw. It is an opportunity to taste the distillery character without decades of oak influence smoothing everything out.

Tasting Notes

No formal tasting notes are provided for this bottling at time of review. What I can say is that Linkwood at this age and strength typically offers a clean, malty backbone with a bright fruitiness that Speyside does so well. Expect the ABV to carry some warmth, but nothing aggressive — this is a well-mannered spirit even at full strength.

The Verdict

This is a well-chosen cask from a distillery that deserves more attention than it typically receives. Linkwood rarely appears as an official bottling on most shelves, which means independent releases like this one from Carn Mor are often the best way in. At 8 years old, it will not have the layered complexity of something twice its age, but it is not trying to be that. It is honest, well-made Speyside single malt bottled at a strength that lets the spirit speak clearly. The price is fair for what you are getting — a cask strength, independently bottled single malt from a respected distillery. I have had far less interesting whiskies at higher price points. A score of 7.6 reflects a whisky that does its job confidently and offers genuine character without pretension. It is not a once-in-a-decade dram, but it is one I would happily pour again.

Best Served

Pour it neat first and give it five minutes in the glass. Then add a few drops of water — at 51.2%, a small splash will open things up without drowning the spirit. This is a whisky that benefits from patience. If you are in the mood for something longer, a Highball with good soda water and a twist of lemon peel would suit the Speyside character well, though I would suggest trying it neat at least once before mixing.
