Elements of Islay has built a reputation on a simple premise: let the whisky do the talking. Their coded bottlings strip away the marketing gloss and ask you to engage with what's actually in the glass. Lp12 is the twelfth release under the 'Lp' code — and if you follow this series, you'll know that particular pair of letters has long been associated with one of Islay's most recognisable distilleries. The producer, Speciality Drinks Ltd, leaves the source officially unconfirmed, but the coding system is hardly a state secret among enthusiasts.

What we can say with certainty is that this is an Islay single malt bottled at a punchy 54.7% ABV, without an age statement, and without chill filtration or added colour. That's the Elements of Islay standard, and it's one I've always respected. You're getting whisky presented honestly, at a strength the bottler believed best represented the cask or vatting they selected. At £150, it sits firmly in specialist territory — this isn't a casual purchase, and it shouldn't be.

What to Expect

The 'Lp' releases in the Elements range have historically delivered bold, coastal Islay character. At 54.7%, expect intensity. This is a whisky that arrives with conviction. NAS bottlings in this series tend to draw from a mix of cask ages, allowing the bottler to chase a flavour profile rather than a number on the label. It's a philosophy I have time for, provided the result justifies the approach — and at this price point, you're paying for curatorial judgement as much as liquid.

Islay at cask strength is not for the faint-hearted. The ABV here suggests this was bottled to preserve the full weight of the spirit's character, and that's precisely what draws collectors and Islay devotees to the Elements range. Each numbered release is finite, which adds a layer of exclusivity that the price reflects.

The Verdict

I'm giving Lp12 a 7.7 out of 10. This is a confident, well-presented Islay single malt from a series that has earned its credibility over more than a dozen releases under this code. The commitment to natural colour and cask-strength bottling counts for a great deal in my book — it signals integrity, and it means you're tasting something close to what came out of the cask. The price is steep, but it's not unreasonable for an independent, cask-strength Islay bottling with limited availability. If you're an Islay collector or someone who appreciates the Elements series, Lp12 is a worthy addition. If you're newer to the style, there are gentler entry points — but few that offer this level of transparency about what you're actually drinking.

Best Served

Pour it neat first and sit with it. At 54.7%, a few drops of cool, still water will open this up considerably — don't be shy about adding water in stages. Islay malts at cask strength reward patience. Let it breathe in the glass for five minutes, add water gradually, and taste between additions. You'll find the sweet spot where the intensity balances without losing the coastal backbone that makes Islay whisky what it is. A Glencairn glass is ideal here; you want to concentrate those aromas rather than let them scatter.
