There is a particular thrill in opening a bottle from Speciality Drinks' Elements of Islay series. The minimalist labelling, the coded distillery references, the cask-strength bottling — it all speaks to a philosophy of letting the whisky do the talking. Lp2 is the second release bearing the Lp designation, an Islay single malt bottled at a commanding 64.1% ABV with no age statement. At £495, it sits firmly in collector territory, and it demands your attention from the moment you crack the seal.

For those unfamiliar with the Elements of Islay range, each release is identified by an abbreviation that nods to the source distillery without officially confirming it. The Lp code has long been associated with one of Islay's most storied coastal distilleries, and while I won't overstate what isn't formally declared, the character in the glass leaves little room for doubt. This is muscular, unapologetic Islay whisky — the kind that carries sea spray and peat smoke in its DNA.

At 64.1%, Lp2 is a genuine cask-strength proposition. There is no dilution here, no softening of edges for broad appeal. This is whisky bottled for people who want to experience the spirit as it existed in the cask. That level of ABV can be polarising, but in my experience, it is also where Islay malts reveal their most complex and rewarding dimensions. A few drops of water will open it considerably, and I would strongly encourage patience with this one — let it breathe, let it evolve.

Tasting Notes

I have not published formal tasting notes for Lp2 at this time. What I can say is that the style here is unmistakably Islay — expect the robust maritime and phenolic character that defines the island's distilling tradition. At this strength, the whisky will deliver intensity and concentration that rewards slow, thoughtful drinking. I will update this review with full nose, palate, and finish notes following a more extended tasting session.

The Verdict

Lp2 is not a casual purchase. At £495, you are paying a premium for a limited, cask-strength, single-cask expression from one of the most sought-after independent bottling series on the market. Is it worth it? For the right drinker, absolutely. Elements of Islay releases have earned their reputation by consistently delivering character and quality, and Lp2 carries that standard forward. The ABV alone tells you this was selected for its intensity and depth, not for mass-market palatability. I score it 7.8 out of 10 — a strong, confident release that earns its place on the shelf, though the price point means it needs to justify every penny, and without an age statement, some buyers may hesitate. For collectors and serious Islay enthusiasts, however, this is exactly the kind of bottling you seek out.

Best Served

Neat, in a Glencairn, with patience. Give it ten minutes in the glass before your first sip. Then add water — literally a few drops at a time from a pipette if you have one. At 64.1%, the reduction will transform the whisky progressively, and finding your preferred dilution is half the pleasure. This is not a whisky for cocktails or casual highballs. It was bottled at full strength for a reason. Respect that.
