Tasting Notes

Nose

Lotus flower, European wildflower honey. The rum cask finishing adds a sweetish, mellow quality. A pleasant, inviting aroma.

Palate

Oily roasted peanuts with sugar. Warm, not too smoky, silky smooth. The Talisker key malt contributes a peppery, maritime quality, while the Guyanese rum cask finishing adds Caribbean sweetness.

Finish

Surprisingly long and warming. The rum influence sustains pleasantly.

MacNaMara Double Matured is a blended Scotch from Pràban na Linne — the same Isle of Skye company behind Té Bheag — finished in Guyanese rum casks and bottled without chill filtration. The key malt is Talisker, whose peppery, maritime character provides the blend's backbone.

The rum cask finishing adds a Caribbean sweetness that complements the Talisker's natural spice. The result is a mellow, sweet-savoury blend with more character than most at its price. The Talisker influence can be felt in the peppery warmth, while the rum adds a smooth, sugary richness.

MacNaMara Double Matured is an excellent-value rum-finished blend. The Talisker backbone, the rum cask sweetness and the non-chill-filtered presentation create a blend with genuine character at an everyday price. An excellent Scotch for this price, as enthusiasts consistently note.

This is a whiskey that rewards patience. The first sip is all caramel and vanilla, but give it twenty minutes in the glass and layers of baking spice, toasted oak, and dried stone fruit emerge. The mouthfeel is silky and rich. One of the best bottles I've opened this year.
