There are distilleries whose names carry weight before you've even drawn the cork, and Mortlach is firmly among them. This 10 Year Old, distilled in 2012 and released as part of La Maison du Whisky's Artist Collective 6.6 series, arrives at a confident 48% ABV — a strength that signals intent. At £115, it sits in that interesting middle ground where you're paying for something more considered than a standard range bottling, but you're not yet in the realm of speculation. You're paying for the whisky itself, and that's exactly as it should be.

LMDW's Artist Collective series has built a quiet reputation among those who pay attention to independent Speyside bottlings. The premise is straightforward: select good casks, bottle them honestly, let the spirit do the talking. There's no chill filtration theatre here, no artificial colouring to flatter the eye. What you get in the glass is what the cask gave up, and with Mortlach as the source, that tends to mean something rather more robust and meaty than the typical Speyside profile might suggest.

Mortlach has long been regarded as one of Speyside's more muscular distilleries — a spirit with backbone, often described as having a savoury, almost sulphurous depth that sets it apart from its more delicate neighbours. At ten years old and 48%, this bottling should offer that characteristic weight without the oak having completely taken over the conversation. It's the kind of age statement that lets distillery character lead rather than cask influence dominate, which for Mortlach is precisely where you want to be.

Tasting Notes

I'll be updating this section with full tasting notes in due course. What I will say is that at this strength and age, expect the house style to present itself with clarity — this is a whisky that should reward patience in the glass as it opens up over twenty minutes or so.

The Verdict

At 8.1 out of 10, this is a bottling I'd recommend without hesitation to anyone who appreciates Speyside whisky with genuine character. The Artist Collective series continues to deliver honest, well-selected casks, and pairing that curatorial approach with Mortlach spirit is a sound decision. The 48% ABV is well-judged — enough strength to carry flavour and texture without tipping into hot territory. At £115, you're not getting a bargain, but you are getting a thoughtfully presented independent bottling from one of Speyside's most respected distilleries. For the drinker who has grown weary of identikit sherried Speyside releases and wants something with a bit more sinew, this delivers. It's serious whisky without taking itself too seriously, and that balance is harder to find than it should be.

Best Served

Neat, in a Glencairn, with time. Give it a good five minutes after pouring before you nose it. If it feels tight, a few drops of water will open the mid-palate considerably at this strength — 48% responds well to a gentle reduction. This is an after-dinner whisky, the kind you sit with when the conversation has turned quiet and the evening is winding down. A Highball would be a waste of what LMDW have put together here.
