There was a time, not so long ago, when the phrase "Norwegian single malt" would have drawn a raised eyebrow from any serious whisky drinker. Those days are behind us. Myken Ocean Heart Arctic Island Whisky is a 47% ABV single malt from one of the more remote corners of the Scandinavian whisky movement, and it arrives with the kind of quiet confidence that demands you pay attention.

Myken is an island — a small, wind-battered outcrop off the northern Norwegian coast, well above the Arctic Circle. That geography matters. Maturation in sub-arctic maritime conditions produces a spirit shaped by cold, salt air and dramatic seasonal temperature swings. The result, in my experience, tends toward a certain coastal minerality and a slower, more considered interaction between cask and spirit than you'd find in warmer climates. At 47% ABV, this has been bottled at a strength that preserves character without overwhelming. It's a sensible decision that suggests the producer trusts what's in the bottle.

This is a NAS release, which in the context of a relatively young distilling nation is neither surprising nor cause for concern. What matters is execution, and Ocean Heart presents itself as a well-constructed single malt that wears its maritime origins openly. The name alone tells you where their ambitions lie — this is whisky rooted in place, shaped by an environment that most Scottish distillers would consider extreme. For those of us who appreciate island-influenced malts from the Scottish tradition, there's a recognisable kinship here, but Ocean Heart is its own thing entirely.

Tasting Notes

I'll be honest — detailed tasting notes for this particular bottling aren't something I'm able to verify independently at the time of writing. What I can say is that the style profile, given the coastal Arctic maturation and 47% strength, points toward a spirit with saline character, a clean malt backbone, and whatever influence the cask programme has imparted. Norwegian distillers have shown a willingness to experiment with wood policy, and the results across the broader Scandinavian category have been genuinely impressive. I'd encourage you to approach this with an open palate and without preconceptions.

The Verdict

At £69.95, Myken Ocean Heart sits in competitive territory. You could spend the same on a perfectly reliable Scottish single malt and know exactly what you're getting. But that rather misses the point. This is whisky from above the Arctic Circle, from an island community producing spirit in conditions that most distillers would consider absurd. The fact that they're doing it well — and bottling at a respectable strength without chill filtration gimmicks or artificial colouring crutches — earns my respect. An 8 out of 10 feels right. This is a whisky that rewards curiosity, and I'd rather drink something made with genuine conviction in a challenging environment than another safe, middle-of-the-road offering from a well-trodden path. Ocean Heart has character, and character is what separates whisky worth talking about from whisky that simply exists.

Best Served

Neat, at room temperature, with five minutes in the glass before your first sip. If you want to open it up, a few drops of cool water will do the job — no more than that. The 47% strength is well-judged and doesn't need diluting into submission. This is a whisky that benefits from patience and a bit of stillness. Pour it, sit with it, and let it speak for itself.
