Old Pulteney has long held a quiet reputation among single malt enthusiasts as one of the more distinctive Highland drams — a whisky shaped as much by geography as by craft. The 12 Year Old is the distillery's flagship expression, and at £35.95, it sits in that increasingly rare sweet spot: an age-statement single malt that won't have you wincing at the till. I've returned to this bottle more times than I can count over the years, and it remains one of my go-to recommendations for anyone looking to explore beyond the usual suspects.

What sets Old Pulteney apart from much of the Highland category is its coastal character. This is a whisky that wears its maritime origins openly. At 40% ABV, it's bottled at the standard strength, which some purists may find a touch conservative for a 12-year-old single malt — and I'd tend to agree that a bump to 43% or 46% would let this expression stretch its legs further. But what's here is still well worth your attention.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specific notes where my memory would be doing the heavy lifting, but I can speak to the style with confidence. Old Pulteney 12 is a whisky defined by a certain saline freshness — expect something lighter and more bright than the typical honeyed, heathery Highland profile. There's a clean, slightly oily quality to it that speaks to its seaside provenance. If you're coming from sherried Speysiders or peated Islay malts, this will feel like a palate reset in the best possible way. It's a whisky that favours subtlety over spectacle, and rewards patience in the glass.

The Verdict

At 12 years old with an age statement proudly on the label, this is becoming something of a rarity at this price point. Too many distilleries have quietly retired their entry-level age-statement bottlings in favour of NAS releases, so Old Pulteney deserves credit for holding the line here. The coastal single malt category has grown crowded in recent years, but this expression remains one of the more genuine examples — it doesn't just gesture at maritime character, it delivers it.

I'm giving the Old Pulteney 12 a 7.6 out of 10. It's a reliably good whisky that slightly undersells itself at 40% ABV — a decision that holds it back from greatness. But the quality of spirit is clearly there, the price is fair, and it offers something genuinely different from the Highland mainstream. For newcomers to single malt, it's an excellent entry point. For seasoned drinkers, it's the kind of honest, well-made dram that earns a permanent spot on the shelf.

Best Served

Pour it neat and let it open up for five minutes — Old Pulteney rewards a little air. A small splash of water, no more than a teaspoon, can help coax out some of the more delicate coastal notes. This also makes a rather fine Highball with quality soda water and a strip of lemon peel — the saline character plays beautifully against the carbonation. Avoid ice if you can; at 40%, it doesn't need the chill and you'll lose some of what makes this whisky distinctive.
