Wales is not the first country that comes to mind when most people think of single malt whisky. Scotland, Japan, perhaps Ireland — these are the established players. But Penderyn has been quietly making a case for Welsh whisky since the early 2000s, and the Legend bottling sits at the heart of their core range. At £33.75 for a Welsh single malt, it occupies interesting territory — affordable enough to be an everyday pour, yet carrying the weight of a distillery that has genuinely carved out its own identity in a crowded market.

Penderyn Legend is a no-age-statement expression bottled at 40% ABV. The NAS designation means the distillery has opted for flexibility over a specific maturation commitment, blending casks to achieve a consistent house style rather than chasing a number on the label. For a relatively young distillery — we are not talking about centuries of unbroken production here — that is a sensible approach. It allows the spirit character to lead, and in Penderyn's case, that spirit has always been notably light and fruity compared to its Scottish counterparts.

What makes Penderyn worth paying attention to is the single copper-pot Faraday still they use. It is an unusual piece of kit in the whisky world, producing spirit in a single distillation rather than the double or triple distillation more commonly seen elsewhere. The result is a spirit with its own distinct fingerprint — one that does not try to imitate Speyside or Highland malts but instead goes its own way entirely.

What to Expect

I will not pretend to offer granular tasting notes here, as this is a style overview rather than a clinical breakdown. What I will say is that Penderyn Legend is a whisky that rewards an open mind. If you approach it expecting a sherried bruiser or a peated heavyweight, you will be disappointed. This is a lighter, more approachable single malt — the kind of dram that works before dinner or as an introduction for someone moving beyond blends for the first time. The 40% ABV keeps things gentle, and while I would personally prefer a touch more strength to let the spirit really express itself, it does make this an easy, unchallenging pour.

At its price point, Legend competes with entry-level Scotch single malts, and it holds its ground. There is a cleanness to Penderyn's spirit that feels modern and well-crafted, even if it lacks the depth that longer maturation or higher proof might bring. It is honest whisky — no smoke and mirrors, no marketing gimmicks disguising thin spirit.

The Verdict

I am giving Penderyn Legend a 7.5 out of 10. It earns that score by being exactly what it sets out to be: an accessible, well-made Welsh single malt at a fair price. It is not trying to compete with a 15-year-old Speyside, and it should not be judged as though it is. What it does offer is a genuine point of difference in a world where too many whiskies taste like variations on the same theme. For anyone curious about what Welsh whisky actually tastes like, this is the place to start. And at under £34, the cost of satisfying that curiosity is remarkably low.

Best Served

Pour it neat at room temperature and give it five minutes in the glass to open up. If you find the 40% a touch closed, a small splash of cool water — no more than a teaspoon — will help release what is there. This also makes a surprisingly good Highball: 50ml over ice in a tall glass, topped with a quality soda water and a thin strip of lemon peel. The lighter body suits the format well, and it makes for a crisp, refreshing serve on a warm evening.
