Penderyn Madeira Finish / 2 Miniatures and Glass Set Welsh Whisky

7.5 /10

Type: Bourbon
ABV: 46%
Price: £17.75

Penderyn is a name that keeps coming up in conversations about world whisky, and for good reason. This Madeira Finish expression — packaged here as a miniatures and glass set — is one of the most accessible entry points into Welsh whisky you'll find. At £17.75 for two miniatures and a branded glass, it's practically an invitation to sit down and pay attention to what Wales is doing with single malt.

For those unfamiliar, Penderyn operates out of the Brecon Beacons and distils using a unique single copper-pot Faraday still — a setup that produces a notably light, fruity spirit. The Madeira Finish takes that spirit and matures it in ex-Bourbon casks before a finishing period in rich Madeira wine casks. That combination of American oak sweetness and Portuguese fortified wine influence is what gives this whisky its signature character. At 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, they're not cutting corners on presentation either.

Tasting Notes

I don't have my detailed tasting notes to hand for this particular bottling, but I can tell you what to expect from the style. The Madeira Finish is known for sitting in that sweet spot between fruit-forward and gently oaky. Think dried apricot, raisin, and a kind of honeyed warmth that the Madeira casks bring to the table. The 46% ABV gives it enough weight to carry those flavours without any burn — it drinks remarkably smooth for a whisky at this strength. If you've spent time with sherried Scotch, you'll find familiar ground here, but Penderyn has its own lighter, more elegant fingerprint that sets it apart.

The Verdict

Here's what I think makes this set worth your money: it's a genuine introduction to a distillery that's doing things differently. You're not getting a gimmick — you're getting two pours of a well-regarded expression plus a glass, all for less than the price of a couple of pints in most cities. The Madeira Finish is Penderyn's flagship for a reason. It's approachable without being simple, and interesting enough that experienced drinkers won't feel short-changed. A 7.5 out of 10 feels right to me. It's a solid, well-made whisky that punches above its price point, and the gift set format makes it ideal for someone who wants to try before committing to a full bottle. My only minor gripe is that NAS (no age statement) whiskies always leave me wanting a little more transparency, but the liquid itself doesn't give me any cause for complaint.

Best Served

Pour this neat in the glass that comes with it — that's the whole point of the set. Give it five minutes to open up after pouring. If you find it a touch intense at 46%, a few drops of water will coax out more of those dried fruit and honey notes. This isn't a cocktail whisky — it's too interesting to bury in a mix. Sip it slowly after dinner, maybe alongside some dark chocolate or a bit of fruitcake. That Madeira influence pairs beautifully with rich, sweet foods.
