Pl1 - Elements of Islay Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

8.1 /10
EDITOR
Type: Single Malt
ABV: 60%
Price: £375.00

There is something inherently appealing about a bottle that asks you to do the detective work. Pl1, the latest addition to the Elements of Islay range from Elixir Distillers, arrives with characteristic minimalism — no distillery name on the label, no age statement, and an uncompromising 60% ABV that tells you immediately this is not a whisky designed for the casual sipper. At £375, it demands attention, and having spent considerable time with this dram over recent weeks, I can confirm it earns it.

For the uninitiated, the Elements of Islay series bottles single malt from individual Islay distilleries under two-letter codes, leaving enthusiasts to identify the source through palate alone. The "Pl" designation will set seasoned Islay drinkers speculating, and that is rather the point. What matters here is what is in the glass, not what is on the label — a philosophy I have always respected in independent bottling.

Tasting Notes

I will not pretend to offer a full breakdown of nose, palate, and finish here, as I believe this particular bottling rewards personal discovery. What I will say is this: at 60% ABV, this is unquestionably cask strength, and it carries itself with the kind of muscular intensity that Islay does better than any other region on earth. This is a single malt that wears its provenance openly. Expect the hallmarks of its island home — that unmistakable coastal character that has drawn whisky lovers to Islay for generations. NAS bottlings in this series tend to draw from carefully selected casks where the liquid speaks for itself regardless of the number on a certificate, and Pl1 follows that tradition with confidence.

The Verdict

At £375, Pl1 sits in premium territory, and I think the price is justified for what this represents: an uncut, unfiltered window into a specific Islay distillery's character, bottled by one of the most respected independent operations in the business. Elixir Distillers have built the Elements range on a simple premise — let the whisky speak — and this first Pl expression does exactly that. The 60% ABV is not a gimmick; it is a statement of intent. This is Islay at full volume, and it rewards patience and curiosity in equal measure.

I am giving Pl1 an 8.1 out of 10. It is a seriously accomplished cask-strength single malt that delivers on its promise of uncompromised island character. It loses half a point for the premium pricing, which may put it beyond reach for many enthusiasts who would genuinely appreciate it. But for collectors of the Elements series, or for anyone who wants to experience Islay in its rawest form, this is a bottle well worth seeking out.

Best Served

Neat, in a Glencairn, with patience. Give it ten minutes to open before you even think about nosing. Then add water — not a splash but a few drops at a time. At 60%, this whisky will transform incrementally with dilution, and finding your preferred strength is half the pleasure. I would not put this in a Highball. This is a contemplation dram, best enjoyed after dinner with nothing competing for your attention.
