Reservoir Rye Virginia Rye Whiskey is one of those bottles that catches your attention precisely because it doesn't follow the usual playbook. This isn't a Kentucky rye or a craft distillery riding the coattails of MGP sourcing — this comes out of Virginia, a state that's been quietly building a serious whiskey reputation over the past decade. At 50% ABV and carrying no age statement, Reservoir is asking you to judge it on what's in the glass, not what's on the label. And honestly? That confidence is warranted.

What strikes me first about Reservoir as a distillery is their commitment to single-grain expressions. Rather than blending multiple grains into a mashbill, they've built their reputation on letting individual grains speak for themselves. This rye expression puts that philosophy front and centre. Under American whiskey regulations, a rye whiskey must contain at least 51% rye grain in the mashbill, but Reservoir pushes that concept further — they're known for working with 100% rye mashbills, which gives this spirit a character that's distinctly different from the rye-forward bourbons many drinkers are used to.

The 50% ABV is a smart bottling strength. It sits right at that sweet spot where you're getting genuine intensity without the kind of heat that shuts your palate down. For a non-age-stated whiskey, this proof tells me there's enough maturity and depth in the liquid to handle the higher strength. Watered-down NAS whiskey is a red flag; full-strength NAS whiskey is usually a sign that the distiller trusts their product.

Tasting Notes

I'll be upfront — I'm not going to fabricate specific tasting notes here. What I can tell you is what to expect from a 100% rye at this strength from a Virginia producer. Rye grain brings spice, herbal complexity, and a drier profile than corn-heavy whiskeys. Virginia's climate, with its hot summers and genuine temperature swings, tends to accelerate maturation and pull aggressive flavour from the barrel. Expect something bold, grain-forward, and with more personality per sip than most mainstream ryes on the shelf.

The Verdict

At £90.75, Reservoir Rye sits in a competitive bracket. You're paying a premium over the big-name Kentucky ryes, and that's a fair conversation to have. But what you're getting is something genuinely different — a craft whiskey with a clear point of view, bottled at a proper strength, from a region that's earning its stripes. This isn't a bottle for someone who wants safe and familiar. It's for the drinker who's already worked through the Bulleit and Rittenhouse phase and wants to understand what rye can be when a smaller operation gives it their full attention. A 7.6 out of 10 feels right — this is a very good whiskey that rewards curiosity, even if it's not quite hitting the heights of the best aged ryes on the market.

Best Served

This is a Manhattan whiskey, full stop. The boldness at 50% ABV means it won't disappear behind sweet vermouth the way lighter ryes can. Two parts Reservoir Rye, one part good Italian sweet vermouth — Cocchi di Torino if you can get it — and a couple dashes of Angostura. Stir it properly, strain it into a coupe, and hit it with a brandied cherry. The spice and grain character of this rye will cut right through the sweetness and give you a cocktail with real backbone. If you prefer it neat, add just a few drops of water to open it up — that 50% strength responds well to a little dilution without falling apart.

Reservoir makes a decent rye with some nice baking spice and a dry, grainy finish. I enjoyed it neat over the course of a bottle but at over £90 I kept thinking about what else I could grab at that price point. If it were £60-65 I'd rebuy without hesitation.

This one doesn't mess around. At 50% ABV you get a solid rye spice punch up front — black pepper, cinnamon bark, a bit of dried cherry underneath. I sip it neat and it holds up beautifully without water. Virginia doesn't get enough credit for what they're putting out.
