The Singleton name has become something of a gateway into single malt for a great many drinkers, but it would be a mistake to dismiss it as merely introductory. The Singleton of Auchroisk 10 Year Old, presented here in the larger one-litre format, is a Speyside expression that quietly makes a compelling case for itself — particularly for those who appreciate the region's hallmark approachability without sacrificing substance.

At 43% ABV, this sits just above the standard 40% bottling strength that so many entry-level malts default to, and that modest bump makes a genuine difference. There is a sense of structure here, a backbone that gives the whisky room to express itself rather than simply wash over you. Ten years in oak is a sensible maturation period for a Speyside of this character — long enough to develop real depth, short enough to retain the cereal sweetness and fruit-forward brightness that draws people to the region in the first place.

Speyside as a region needs little introduction from me, but it bears repeating: the whiskies produced in this pocket of the Highlands consistently demonstrate a balance between honeyed softness and orchard fruit that few other regions can match with such reliability. The Singleton of Auchroisk fits comfortably within that tradition. This is not a whisky that tries to surprise you. It is one that tries to satisfy you, and there is real craft in that restraint.

Tasting Notes

I will refrain from publishing detailed tasting notes for this expression at this time, as I want to return to it across several sessions before committing specifics to the page. What I will say is this: expect the classic Speyside profile executed with care. The 43% strength gives it a pleasing weight on the tongue, and the ten years of maturation deliver exactly the kind of rounded, malt-driven character that the region is celebrated for. There is nothing thin or hurried about this dram.

The Verdict

At £199 for a full litre, the pricing positions this in interesting territory. On a per-measure basis, you are getting genuine single malt Speyside whisky at a cost that compares favourably to many 70cl bottles in the £130–£150 bracket. The larger format also makes it a practical choice for those who entertain regularly or simply want a reliable Speyside on the shelf without reordering every fortnight. I have scored this 8.3 out of 10 — a strong recommendation that reflects both the quality in the glass and the value proposition of the format. This is an honest, well-made Speyside malt that delivers exactly what it promises, and I respect that enormously.

Best Served

Pour it neat at room temperature and give it five minutes to open up in the glass. If you find the 43% carries a touch more heat than you prefer, a few drops of still water will coax out additional sweetness without dulling the malt character. This also makes a very fine Highball — the Speyside fruit pairs naturally with quality soda water and a twist of lemon peel. For an afternoon dram or a pre-dinner pour, you would be hard-pressed to find a more agreeable companion at this price point.
