I'll admit it freely: when someone places a Danish single malt on my desk, a part of me still raises an eyebrow. Not out of dismissal — I got past that years ago — but out of genuine curiosity. Stauning has done more than perhaps any other distillery to prove that exceptional single malt whisky does not require a Scottish postcode, and their Smoke expression is a particularly compelling argument.

Stauning Smoke is a non-age-statement single malt bottled at 47% ABV, a strength that signals confidence in the spirit. The distillery — situated on the west coast of Jutland — has built a reputation on floor-malted barley and direct-fire copper pot stills, an approach that owes more to tradition than to the shortcuts of modern efficiency. What sets the Smoke apart in a crowded field of peated whiskies is its use of locally sourced peat and heather, which gives it a character distinct from its Islay or Highland counterparts. This is not a whisky trying to be Scottish. It is doing something of its own.

At just under £79, the Smoke sits in a competitive bracket. You are paying a premium over many Scottish NAS single malts, but you are also buying into a distillery that refuses to cut corners on raw materials or method. The 47% bottling strength is a welcome touch — enough muscle to carry flavour without the need for cask-strength bravado.

Tasting Notes

I have not provided formal nose, palate, and finish breakdowns for this particular bottling at the time of writing. What I can say from experience is that Stauning's Smoke expressions tend to deliver a softer, more herbaceous peat character than you would find from Scottish distilleries. Expect smoke that leans towards smouldering heather and dried grass rather than iodine and sea spray. The barley sweetness typically holds its ground well against the peat, and the direct-fire distillation adds a certain weight and texture to the spirit that rewards patience in the glass.

The Verdict

Stauning Smoke earns a 7.6 out of 10 from me, and that score reflects genuine respect. This is a whisky that justifies its price through craftsmanship and a willingness to forge its own identity. It does not attempt to replicate Islay or Speyside — it presents a Scandinavian interpretation of smoke that is coherent, well-constructed, and thoroughly enjoyable. For anyone who appreciates peated whisky and wants to broaden their frame of reference beyond Scotland, this bottle belongs on your shortlist. It is not flawless — the NAS designation leaves me wanting more transparency on maturation — but the liquid itself is honest and well-made. That counts for a great deal.

Best Served

Pour it neat and let it sit for five minutes. The smoke settles and the barley sweetness opens up considerably with a little air. A few drops of water — no more — will soften the peat and let the underlying cereal character come forward. If you are feeling adventurous, this also makes a remarkably good Highball with quality soda water; the smoke carries well through the dilution and the result is clean, refreshing, and genuinely moreish on a warm evening.
