English whisky remains, for many in the trade, something of an acquired conviction. I'll admit I came to The English Distillery's output with a healthy scepticism born of decades spent nosing Speyside and Islay malts — but this 2015 Small Batch Wine Cask Matured release, bottled at nine years old, is the sort of dram that asks you to reconsider your assumptions. At 46% ABV and non-chill filtered by the look of it, this is a single malt that takes itself seriously, and rightly so.

What strikes me first is the maturation choice. Wine cask finishes can be a blunt instrument in the wrong hands — all jammy sweetness and none of the spirit's own character left standing. Here, though, we're talking about a small batch release that's had the better part of a decade to find its balance. Nine years is a meaningful age statement for any single malt, and for an English distillery still building its identity, it represents a genuine commitment to letting the wood do its work at its own pace. That patience deserves recognition.

The category itself — English single malt — is still defining its boundaries. Without the centuries of tradition that anchor Scotch to its regional styles, producers south of the border have the freedom to experiment, and the wine cask maturation here is a clear statement of intent. This isn't a whisky trying to be something it's not. It's carving out its own ground, and the small batch designation suggests a level of cask selection that you don't always see at this price point.

Tasting Notes

I'd encourage you to approach this one without preconceptions. At 46%, expect enough body and texture to carry the wine cask influence without being overwhelmed by it. The age should bring a certain roundness — nine years in active wood tends to soften the edges of a spirit while adding layers of dried fruit, gentle spice, and a vinous depth that wine casks are known for. This is a malt that rewards a slow pour and an unhurried evening.

The Verdict

At £73.25, this sits in competitive territory. You could spend the same on a well-regarded Speyside or a younger Highlands bottling, and you'd drink well. But what you're buying here is something different — a snapshot of English whisky coming of age, quite literally. The nine-year age statement, wine cask maturation, and small batch approach all point to a distillery that's building quality with genuine care rather than rushing product to market. I'm scoring this 7.7 out of 10. It's a confident, well-constructed single malt that earns its place on the shelf, and it's the kind of bottle that makes a persuasive case for English whisky as a category worth watching closely. Not every release from south of the border has convinced me — but this one does.

Best Served

Pour it neat at room temperature and give it ten minutes to open up in the glass. If you find the wine cask influence a touch forward, a few drops of cool water will pull back the sweetness and let the malt speak more clearly. This is an armchair dram — no ice, no mixer, just patience and a decent glass.
