Australian whiskey has been on a quiet tear lately, and The Gospel Straight Rye is one of the more interesting bottles to land on my desk this year. This is an Australian straight rye whiskey bottled at 45% ABV, and right away that category designation tells us something important. To carry the "straight rye" label, the spirit has to meet strict production standards — at least 51% rye in the mashbill, aged in new charred oak, and meeting minimum maturation requirements. The fact that an Australian distillery is holding itself to these American whiskey law standards rather than playing fast and loose with terminology earns immediate respect from me.

The Gospel is a Melbourne-based operation, and while I don't have confirmed details on their exact production setup, what's in the glass speaks for itself. At 45% ABV, this sits at a comfortable proof point — strong enough to carry flavour without overwhelming the palate. It's a NAS release, so we're not getting an age statement, but that's increasingly common in the craft world and honestly, I'd rather judge a whiskey by what it tastes like than by a number on the label.

What to Expect

Rye whiskey, as a category, is defined by its grain. Rye brings spice, herbal character, and a drier profile compared to the sweeter, rounder character you get from corn-heavy bourbons. That high rye mashbill typically delivers peppery kick, baking spice notes, and sometimes a distinctive menthol or eucalyptus edge. With Australian climate and new charred oak in the mix, you can expect the maturation to have worked faster and harder than it would in a cool Scottish warehouse — heat accelerates the interaction between spirit and wood, pulling out more vanilla, caramel, and char influence in a shorter time frame. That's the advantage of making whiskey in a warmer climate, and it's why some of these younger Australian releases punch well above what their age might suggest.

The Verdict

I'm giving The Gospel Straight Rye a 7.6 out of 10. This is a genuinely good whiskey that does something different. The Australian craft whiskey scene is producing serious spirits now, and this bottle is solid evidence of that. At £51.95, you're paying a premium over a standard American rye like Rittenhouse or Wild Turkey 101 Rye, but you're also getting something with real provenance and personality. It's not trying to be a Kentucky rye — it's doing its own thing within the framework of straight rye production standards, and I think that's exactly the right approach. If you're a rye drinker looking to branch out beyond the usual American suspects, or if you're curious about what Australia is doing with whiskey right now, this is a smart buy.

Best Served

This is a natural fit for a Manhattan. Rye is the original base spirit for that cocktail, and a whiskey with this kind of spice-forward, dry profile will stand up beautifully against sweet vermouth without getting lost. Two parts Gospel Rye, one part sweet vermouth, two dashes of Angostura bitters, stirred over ice and strained into a coupe. The rye spice will cut through the sweetness and give you a cocktail with real backbone. It'll also work brilliantly neat or with a single ice cube if you want to appreciate the spirit on its own terms — that 45% ABV is an easy drinking strength that doesn't need much dilution.
