Speyside is not a region typically associated with peat. It is the spiritual home of honeyed, fruit-driven malts — the approachable heart of Scotch whisky. So when a Speyside distillery decides to release a peated expression, it warrants attention. Tomintoul Peated Speyside Single Malt is precisely that kind of whisky: a deliberate departure from convention that asks you to reconsider what this storied region is capable of.

Tomintoul sits in the Cairngorms, at one of the highest elevations of any working distillery in Scotland. It has long been known for producing a light, gentle spirit — often referred to as "the gentle dram." This peated expression is an interesting counterpoint to that reputation. It takes what is fundamentally a delicate Speyside new-make character and introduces peat smoke into the equation, creating something that sits between worlds. It is not an Islay bruiser. It is not trying to be. What it aims for, I believe, is balance — smoke woven through a lighter frame, rather than dominating it.

At 40% ABV and carrying no age statement, this is clearly positioned as an accessible, everyday peated malt. The price point of roughly £37.75 reinforces that. There is no pretension here, no elaborate cask programme to justify a premium. It is a straightforward proposition: peated Speyside at an honest price. And for what it sets out to do, it succeeds.

Tasting Notes

I will reserve detailed tasting notes for a future update, as I want to spend more time with this bottle before committing specifics to print. What I can say is that the overall character is exactly what you would expect from a lightly peated Speyside — the smoke is present but never aggressive, sitting comfortably alongside the sweeter cereal notes that Speyside spirit tends to carry. It drinks easily, perhaps a touch too easily at 40%. I would have liked to see this bottled at 43% or 46% to give the peat a little more room to express itself, but that is a minor gripe rather than a serious failing.

The Verdict

Tomintoul Peated earns its place on the shelf as a genuinely useful bottle. It serves as an excellent bridge for drinkers who enjoy classic Speyside character but want to explore smokier territory without committing to the full intensity of an Islay malt. It is also a solid choice for seasoned peat lovers who want something lighter for a Tuesday evening — not every dram needs to be a statement.

At under £40, the value proposition is strong. This is a well-made, approachable single malt that does not overpromise. It knows what it is, and it delivers on that with quiet confidence. A 7.5 out of 10 feels right — this is a whisky I would happily recommend to friends and keep stocked at home, even if it does not quite reach the heights that a higher bottling strength might have allowed.

Best Served

Pour it neat and let it breathe for five minutes. If the smoke feels a touch closed, add a few drops of water — Speyside peat tends to open up nicely with a little dilution. This also makes an excellent Highball: the lighter smoke and sweet malt character pair beautifully with quality soda water and a twist of lemon peel. On a warm afternoon, that combination is hard to beat.
