I have been looking forward to getting my hands on Dented Brick Bottled-In-Bond Straight Rye Whiskey. , it promises genuine character.
Nose
The nose is earthy and borders on rubbing alcohol at first blush. Allowing the glass to open we find winter wheat and rye notes. I dont find much vanilla, but there is white sugar.
Palate
The palate is where this really open up. Cinnamon, maple syrup, pancakes, and honey. It evolves across the tongue into molasses, with a hint of smoke at the back end. The finish is where we find a bit of the dry rye notes and some smokey oak notes. There is just the faintest touch of alcohol at about the mid palate, but not so much as to detract from the overall flavor. This is a strong example of a bottled-in-bond whiskey. The flavors are benefited by the alcohol content, and the rye spice really gets to blend with the oak barrel within the four years. The flavors also hold nicely on the tongue without immediately burning the chest. There is a small warmth from this whiskey. This is a young whiskey and it will do well as it ages, but I think it is very approachable and great in the glass. It doesnt have the spice you expect from a straight rye, but it is enjoyable.
