There is a lot to like about Elijah Craig Barrel Proof B253 on paper. At 62.1% ABV and $69.99, let us see if it lives up to expectations.
Nose
This is a lovely orange copper color and forms small beads around the glass that turn into thin long legs.
Palate
This smells like cinnamon toast and a freshly cut tree. Little bit of sweet spice and vanilla with fresh oak.
Finish
This is a hot one, as is to be expected from its proof. Moving past the heat of it there are some dry notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg up front. Transitions to a bit of musty leather, and finishes with a dry peppery oak. Addition of water brings out a bit of caramel sweetness, but also a bit more astringency.
The Bottom Line
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof B253 delivers the goods. It is well-made, genuinely enjoyable, and at $69.99 represents solid value for what you are getting. I would happily buy this again.
