There is a lot to like about Pinhook Vertical Series 7 Year Rye on paper. At 105 proof and $90, let us see if it lives up to expectations.

Nose

Caramel color, light feel in the glass with attractive legs.

Palate

Cherry pits and brown sugar sweetness, with a slightly herbaceous note bordering on pickle-brine (in a good way!). That 95% rye mash bill had my expectations conditioned for somewhat aggressive spice on the palate, but I was met with a mellow, tannic sweetness that was a little surprising and very sippable. The limited availability kind of scopes the release towards collectors and brand devotees, but there’s plenty here for any whiskey drinker to enjoy!

The Bottom Line

Pinhook Vertical Series 7 Year Rye is outstanding — one of those bottles that reminds you why you fell in love with whiskey in the first place. If you see it at $90, do not hesitate. This one earns a permanent spot on the shelf.
