Proper Twelve Irish Apple represents an interesting proposition in the evolving Irish whiskey landscape.
Nose
Not as sweet as the nose, but again, overwhelmingly tastes of candied apple. The same pear not comes in just at the beginning on the sip. Lightly sweet all of the way through, the very back palate has a bit more malty weight, with a brown sugar sweetness to it.
Palate
I wouldn’t personally consider this much of a sipper, but it has its place. Again, flavored whiskey just has a limited niche (which is why, while I did like it, I couldn’t in good faith give it a higher rating). In the case of this expression, I think it could create some interesting cocktails, for example: something along the apple-tini line, especially with the retro cocktail revival, a great addition to sangria, or spice up some fall cider.
Finish
The finish is fairly decent, with more of the brown sugar coming through. Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by Whiskeyful or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
Verdict
Proper Twelve Irish Apple is a modest offering that serves its purpose without distinction. Those seeking depth or complexity may wish to look elsewhere in this price bracket.
