I have been looking forward to getting my hands on Redemption Sur Lee Straight Rye Whiskey. Bottled at 47% ABV and priced at $59.99, it promises genuine character.
Nose
Initially this felt rich without being overpowering. Surprisingly alcohol is still present although muted. Spring flowers with light milled grains slowly release from the nose. On the back end is the distinct sour yeast aroma as it warms up. Almost a lager or pilsner malt note.
Palate
Yeas forward which gives way to some bready, malty flavors. The whiskey is very dry and soaks up all the moisture in your mouth. After a sip or two I was able to discover some good sour notes with balanced flavorings lemon zest. The finish was quick, a little too quick. There is a residual taste of earthiness on the back end. A small warmth in the chest but otherwise very soft across all aspects of the sip. The whiskey is interesting. Id wager we are sipping the same Redemption Rye they offer more broadly but theyve used spent yeast to add a twist to the profile. Compared against the standard Redemption Rye this has a few different notes, primarily the sour and yeasty profiles.rnrnOverall there isnt a lot differentiating the two. I liked the experiment here and hope they continue improving off this idea. Id like to see something with a bit older age statement, I think a robust rye would be complimented by the yeast more than this young lower proof offering.

The Bottom Line
Redemption Sur Lee Straight Rye Whiskey is fine — not bad, not great, just fine. At $59.99, I think there are better options in this range if you are willing to look around.
