Teeling Wonders Of Wood Virgin Portuguese Oak landed on my desk at 50% abv, carrying a $99.99 price tag. Here is what I found.
Nose
mashbill of 50% malted barley and 50% un-malted barley. triple distilled. 100 proof or 50% abv. $99.99 SRP. Color: light amber with yellow highlights. The mouthfeel for this is delightfully oily, it coats the teeth and tongue. I am entreated to nutmeg and toasted oak. A lot of the notes from the nose did not carry over. I dont find marmalade but there is pepper and a light fruitiness. As we cross into the finish I find tobacco and some salt. The hold is long, but the flavor is relatively muted.
Palate
Light amber with yellow highlights. This is good whiskey. It isnt something Id personally need on my shelf, but my palate isnt for everybody. I found the overall profile to be muted and just stereotypical to Irish whiskey without really showing off the Portuguese Oak. Teeling, on its own, is a fine whiskey if you enjoy the Irish style. Here, I wish we had had a more complex journey with the finishing oak but unfortunately it just didnt materialize for me.
Finish
Bananas, citrus, clove, and soft oak char are delicately balanced. Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by Whiskeyful or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
The Bottom Line
Teeling Wonders Of Wood Virgin Portuguese Oak is fine — not bad, not great, just fine. At $99.99, I think there are better options in this range if you are willing to look around.
