Port Charlotte represents Bruichladdich at its most peated — a bold counterpoint to the distillery more delicate expressions. This Islay Barley 2014, distilled from locally grown barley and peated to 40 PPM, was aged seven years in oak casks before being bottled at a robust 50% ABV. At $84.99, it occupies an attractive position for those seeking serious Islay character without the premium attached to older expressions.
Appearance
A lovely clear colour, tending toward ultra-light caramel. There is an appealing clarity here that belies the intensity waiting within.
Nose
Peaty and lightly leathered, with a curious chemical note — not unlike an inflatable pool toy freshly removed from its packaging. It is an unusual descriptor, I grant you, but an accurate one. Beneath this, sweeter notes of vanilla and honey provide welcome balance. The interplay between smoke and sweetness on the nose is quite engaging.
Palate
This is where Port Charlotte truly distinguishes itself. The peat is present and accounted for, yet it never descends into the aggressive campfire smoke that can overwhelm lesser peated whiskies. Instead, the smoke integrates beautifully with the malt character, creating something that feels simultaneously classic and contemporary. The 50% ABV provides excellent structure without undue heat.
Finish
Lingering peat smoke accompanied by sweet vanilla and gentle honey warmth. It fades gradually, leaving you with a pleasant memory of where it has been.
Verdict
Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 is, for me, the meeting point of classic and modern Islay whisky — containing all the great characteristics of Scotch without overwhelming the palate with uncontrolled smoke. It is one of my personal favourite Scotch whiskies: perfectly balanced, deeply memorable, and thoroughly rewarding. At this price point, it represents exceptional value for a peated single malt of this calibre. A perfect 10.
