I have been looking forward to getting my hands on Whisky Review: Hakata Whisky Aged 18 Years. Bottled at 42% ABV, it promises genuine character.
Nose
Theres a luxuriousness to the flavor, which combines notes of toffee, stewed red fruits, clove, and ginger. These notes are carried, however, by the yeasty, brothy feel that gives them an umami savory quality that balances the sip. Theres an elegance to the flavor which allows me to explore the intricacies of each taste without any obfuscating sweetness. The finish fades out pleasantly with the aromatic richness of clove and cigar box wood.
Palate
It opens with the smell of caramel and custard, accented by hints of allspice. The scent then opens up with notes of dark red fruits and yeast. The 18 year old expression of Hakata Whisky is truly excellent. This whisky takes full advantage of its distinctive style and shows just how well something savory and spicy can taste. The use of umami flavor gives so much nuance and depth to the flavors present. Its a delicious mix of tastes, and theres a clarity and texture that allows you to fully appreciate the profile. This is a high-end whisky, through and through, and I strongly recommend that American buyers take advantage of its availability on this side of the Pacific.
