Whisky Review: The Macallan 12 Years Old Double Cask landed on my desk at 86 Proof, carrying a $80 price tag. With 12 years in Oloroso sherry-seasoned American and E of age behind it, Here is what I found.
Nose
The whisky has a sweet, vegetal nose, with notes of sugar cane and oak along with the subtle essence of a summer fair candied apple.
Palate
An extremely mellow sipper, the whisky starts with notes of marshmallow and anise, along with the coating warmth of ginger and citrus. The oak comes through strongest in the finish and allows for a smooth end to a purely pleasant sipper.
Finish
I wouldnt sully the integrity and subtle profile of this whisky by adding ice or water. You need a bit of concentration to really make out the different layers of this well-balanced whisky, but it is without a doubt a delightfully easy-to-drink dram.
The Bottom Line
Whisky Review: The Macallan 12 Years Old Double Cask delivers the goods. It is well-made, genuinely enjoyable, and at $80 represents solid value for what you are getting. I would happily buy this again.
